Mystery Malaysia flight may have been hundreds of miles off course (CNN Breaking)

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was hundreds of miles off course, traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination and had stopped sending identifying transponder codes before it disappeared, a senior Malaysian Air Force official told CNN Tuesday.

If correct, these are ominous signs that could call into question whether someone in the cockpit might have deliberately steered the plane away from its intended destination, a former U.S. aviation investigator said.

"This kind of deviation in course is simply inexplicable," said Paul Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board.

(snip) The Malaysian Air Force lost track of the plane over Pulau Perak, a tiny island in the Straits of Malacca -- many hundreds of miles from the usual flight path for aircraft traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, the official said.

Buddy of mine had a cell phone jammer once. He would turn it on in a busy cafe or where a bunch of people were talking just to watch everyone look at their phone at the same time.

You can buy a portable one that would work in an area the size of a plane for next to nothing. Now that I really think about it someone screwing with a plane load of people would be idiots not to have one with them.

What’s the point of turning it off course, only to blow it up anyway? Other than to confound searchers?

My guess is that one of the first thing hijackers did was collect all cell phones at gunpoint.
If the plane wasn’t blown up, it may be in Africa.

Any large airfield would have too many witnesses

Not temporary airfields in Banda Aceh where we flew supplies to the tsunami survivors. Nobody would question a night landing, a quick refuel and onto Somalia or wherever else.

Commercial pilot John Lucich on Fox is saying a hijacking of the aircraft for landing in a remote area, then using the passengers in some sort of ransom demand or other terrorist plot is a strong possibility here. Wow.

Where are they going to find a modern 10,000 ft runway to land on in a remote area? A 777 ain't a crop duster.

The Oil slick and debris found in the ocean pointed to it going down. Not sure what is going on anymore.

It’s not inexplicable. That means there is no explanation.

Ok, then this is inconceivable.

The aircraft would disintegrate on impact with the water. If it went straight down over land, especially in a jungle, there would be only a smoking hole, which would make finding the crash sight extremely difficult.

Somalia, where there are lots of long runways used to deliver foodstuffs and other supplies.

Yes it is puzzling. Maybe the debris is there and hasn’t been spotted yet. It’s a huge ocean. Or maybe the explosion was so great there wasn’t much left or just enough for the whole plane to stay intact in air and break up upon intact and sink. Given they have no idea where it went down this leaves a large area to search. No idea but don’t think a conventional explosion can be ruled out simply because no one has spotted anthing.

It was hijacked, the hijackers made it turn toward some other destination and at some point, blew it up.

Presumably smuggling a bomb on board the plane would be a lot more difficult than getting hijackers on board.

Suppose, just suppose, that a foreign power is involved and has a runway available to them for such a thing.

I would say that country would enjoy the ire of every nation in the region. They didn’t hijack a plane full of Europeans.

At low-level, I don’t think they could reach Somalia

Suppose it was a country that does not care about the “ire of the world” and thinks that it shall suffer few if any consequences (or doesn’t really care if there are any consequences).

And if a bomb went off at high altitude over a jungle it will take weeks/months to locate a piece of the plane. Over water it might just take a week.
