#SaveJosh: Virginia boy's family pleads for drug to save his life

imee Hardy says her son is in agony. He has battled cancer on and off, and now he's in jeopardy again due to complications from a bone marrow transplant. Doctors believe Brincidofovir could save his life, but the maker of the drug won't provide it.

Chimerix is the company that makes Brincidofovir. They're facing a major ethical dilemma because they say there are hundreds if not thousands of people who need it, but if they give it to patients like Josh, it will slow down their efforts to make it widely available. They hope that will happen in 2016 if it passes all its clinical trials.

"If we were to make it available for this young boy, and I would very much like to as a human being, how would we say no to the dozens, hundreds—potentially thousands of other requests that we get for this drug?" said Kenneth Moch, president and CEO of Chimerix.

Ironically, if he dies, they’ll probably sue the drug company for using an unauthorized drug.

Good for you and all your hard work!

A friend’s grandson just died at age 14. He was diagnosed with a very rare cancer about 3 years ago. Massive drugs and they said he was cancer free. Then his skin started to come off, cured him of that, but his organs shut down and he died.

Just a guess on my part but I think the drugs that cured his cancer ended up killing him. Very sad.

I have had many drug reactions during my life and my doctor knows not to offer me something lightly.

That is great news for that boy and his family. I hope it doesn’t cost the lives of hundreds or thousands of others.

As for the analogy to thalidomide: That was used to help pregnant women control nausea. It wasn't a life-saving drug.

No it wasn't but the lesson is the same. It wasn't thoroughly tested on humans to determine the potential side effects which could be catastrophic....and were.....

Desperate people are willing to go to desperate means in order to possibly cure an incurrable disease and when the miracle cure proves to be a nightmare, as Thalidomide did, they then turn to the pharmaceutical company to place the blame..........
