The gathering took up a stretch of Water Street, with demonstrators standing behind police barricades amid tight security as they prayed in solidarity with their brethren in Israel. 'These kids, a lot of them don't know how to hold a gun. They don't know what physical warfare is,' said Long Island rabbinical student Shmuel Gruis.

In Israel, you are correct. Not the USA.

Perhaps. I understand the highest mitzvah of a Jew is the preservation of Jewish life. If you house catches on fire when studying the Torah, would you not be required to leave the house?
Regardless, studying Torah is not the ONLY duty.
There is a time for every mitzvah in a balanced life.

I assume you are talking about the Talmudic references regarding Jesus?
Nevertheless, it is too many. It infuriates me when a family who already does not support itself deliberately has more children. Most of the families I personally know who do this are actually orthodox Catholics (which I myself am). They receive WIC, CHiP and food stamps. Perhaps I was projecting a bit with my statement but it does seem the Hasidic tradition of sending a husband and father out to study Torah all day while his wife bears many children is a recipe for this sort of thing. I'm familiar with Kiryas Joel where something like 40% are on food stamps. I don't want to take food from hungry children's mouths, but I feel their parents should be more responsible about taking care of their own instead of planning to use the government to feed their children.
The Ultra-Orthodox Haredi sects vote how their rabbis tell them. In New York City, their leaders make deals with Democrats for welfare and special privileges. They will vote for Republican mayors.

True in some ways (comment #68) about Israel, secular states and Prophets. When we’re there in time, all will know it. I would still be afraid to oppose Jewish people being in Israel, though, regardless of the mix of people involved. Some of each of the various groups obviously have their purpose, and many still don’t know it.
But then that brings us around to who is most physically involved in preserving and teaching Torah the most, too (Chassidim). In a big way, they’re not so withdrawn. Some of them are teaching those of us who’ve asked honestly and repeatedly, when all others refuse (except Reform, but I’m not talking about Reform).
