Man’s good deed lands his home on a list of meth labs

DES MOINES, Iowa — On Jan. 5, 2012, Paul Valin called the police to report he’d found a backpack containing what he believed to be meth-making equipment. That simple act of good citizenship landed his and wife Cindy’s house on the National Clandestine Laboratory Register, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency’s list of meth labs.

The NCLR “contains addresses of some locations where law enforcement agencies reported they found chemicals or other items that indicated the presence of either clandestine drug laboratories or dumpsites.”

The fact that Valin found the backpack more than 15 miles from his house isn’t the sort of thing the DEA or any other division of the Department of Justice would have checked on before publishing his address on the NCLR.

According to the NCLR website: “In most cases … the Department has not verified the entry and does not guarantee its accuracy….The Department does not accept responsibility or liability for damages of any kind resulting from reliance on an entry”.

Unlike the DOJ, Paul Valin is willing to accept responsibility. And that’s how his trouble started...

I expect every conservative will find their home on this list at some point.

It makes no sense to treat the citizenry this way. It makes you the enemy of everyone, not just criminals.

After hearing about this, why would anyone give the agency a tip in the future.

This is so self-defeatist of government that it’s evidence of blithering idiocy.

We need to take an axe to this government, through our elected officials. That should be the number one campaign issue in upcoming elections.

Don't talk to police. Ever. For any reason.

Police, like the criminal governments they work for, are not your friend.

Not if the endgame involves prison camps and furnaces.

I never give identification information if I call to report a crime in which I’m not the victim. If the dispatcher tries to intimate me, I just tell her my report is on their tape recording and that if she fails to act on the information I provided, then it’s her and her department’s problem if the whole thing blows up in their faces because she failed to act. That usually gets a change of attitude real fast, including inquiry as to more details about the crime being reported.

(Yes, I know they have caller id, but they still don’t know who called from that phone.)

The comments on the article sound like they came from free-republic.

Seriously it’s long past the point of no-return. The government, local/state/federal, is no longer a force to be dealt with fairly as they will screw you in every way they can. It’s best to have minimal contact and deal with things on your own without their ‘help’.

Hey, null - why do the pretend soldiers in your picture have "assault weapons"?

I thought that "assault weapons" were "weapons of war". Are those Tacticool police guys at war with somebody?

“It makes no sense to treat the citizenry this way. It makes you the enemy of everyone, not just criminals.”

They love the pretend game they are playing against unsuspecting, generally unarmed people. They never stop to think that the bureaucratic bosses that send them out aren’t going to be the ones to initially get a round between the eyes. It hasn’t hurt enough yet for them to stop.

"No good deed..."....indeed.

The Polk County Assessor had also announced he was considering using the information on the NCLR when assessing the value of a house.

How ironic if his tax burden was reduced...

Jokes aside, these are the instructions for NCLR Reporting

This smacks of civil liability by the Des Moines Police Department, as they clearly did not submit accurate information. Gross negligence on their part, imho.

Go to the instructions and see for yourselves.

Anyone who would not help to get this information expunged, should be summarily fired on the spot.

It makes no sense to treat the citizenry this way. It makes you the enemy of everyone, not just criminals.

You are thinking logically. Statists follow a different code...

We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”

It’s one thing to get [some] training along with uniforms, armor and tactical weapons and then go out and run roughshod over unsuspecting civilians.

It’s totally different when a sizable portion of an urban area turns into a war zone (as we have in major Dem run cities right now). Picture that “war zone” or “zone of occupation” if you will, being largely populated by (well) armed, intelligent, working and middle class citizens that have morphed into rebellion mode. These tough guys, for the most part bullies IMO, are going to have a serious change of attitude accompanied by rapidly shrinking balls.

Blood will run in the streets, but that won’t subjugate the good people once aroused.

Suggestion to *everyone*: Get Zello and learn how to use it. Venezuela, Egypt will show you why. Oppressive, spying governments are not the only beneficiaries of technology.
