"Who cant see the obvious here?" I must be oblivious here on FR - I don't see the /sarc tag from champions of paramilitary buildup.

“Obama said he wanted a civilian force as well armed as the military.”
Socialist progressives may have indeed learned something from communism’s past failures, just not the lessons we’d like.
You see, The Spanish Civil War and Pinochet’s Chile have illustrated to far-left radicals that if they really want to bring about socialist revolution in a country that they’re going to have to take steps to ensure that the military is incapable of putting up effective resistance. Now they make sure they gut the military first, infiltrate it with ideological fellow travelers, and ensure that there is a politically “reliable” paramilitary of brownshirts to put down dissent.

There have been some LEOs in small towns waving the “UN is coming” warning flag as of late. I’m not sure if it’s tin foil hat or if they’re modern-day Paul Reveres.

There are articles on the web describing how to disable the vehicles. The differential "pumpkin" and rear air brake bellows are soft spots. There is only one way in and out...the rear door. Easy to pin it down from the rear. Paint or baby oil on the windshield makes visibility a bitch. There are many more ways to compromise the vehicles with very low tech. There is no justification for government agents to deploy these vehicles against citizens on our own soil.

Time to reverse engineer the M9A1 and M31 anti-tank (HEAT) rifle grenade. Load some grenade blanks and make some M7A3 and M76 clamp-on launchers for M1 or M1A/M14 rifles. Other rifles with 22mm flash suppressors (such as the FN FAL or Yugoslav Model 59/66 SKS rifle) come with built-in launchers and need only the grenade blanks. While you're at it, reverse engineer HE frag and WP rifle grenades too. The rifle grenade is portable artillery on the cheap. With a range of 400 meters [with the M7 impulse charge or booster cartridge].

So what ever happened to selling surplus?
I mean, you wouldn't have to worry so much what neighborhood you drove through with one of those...

Current FedGov policy will not allow armored vehicle sales to non-governmental agencies without demilitarization. If Joe Jones wanted to buy a surplus MRAP, he'd be required to de-mil it (although I don't know to what extent). A county sheriff's office or city police department could get one for a very low price or maybe even donated to them. In any event, the typical MRAP is nothing but a wheeled armored personnel carrier — an armored truck. They get stuck easily, they're very top heavy, blind as a bat when closed up, clumsy vehicles, and very expensive to maintain. They are vulnerable to improvised weapons as primitive as a Molotov Cocktail.
