Republicans are unhappy that President Obama is invoking his executive powers to govern in the face of a do-nothing-in-2014 House of Representatives. To hear them talk, you would think our chief executive is modeling himself on the late Hugo Chavez and wants to seize dictatorial control.
This, of course, is nonsense. In fact, Obama has in many ways been less aggressive in his use of executive authority than his predecessors.
Take the matter of executive orders. According to the American Presidency Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Obama issued 147 executive orders in his first term. This compares with 173 in George W. Bushs first term, 200 in Bill Clintons, 213 in Ronald Reagans and 320 in Jimmy Carters single term in office. By this standard, Obama is not doing a very good job if he wants to be a tyrant.
Moreover, since getting major bills through the House is about as likely as an equatorial country dominating the Winter Olympics....

This, of course, is nonsense."
I'll have some of the Hopium he's smokin'.
EJ Dionne is a special kind of smarmy, stupid, ignorant liberal. I won’t read his commentary any more.
The author is correct. He should do more. I think it’s time Obastard started picking his own clubs and shagging his own damned balls.
I'm in.
The sooner we get it over with, the sooner we can rebuild - those of us who are still around...
Apparently it’s the number not the content that matters.
EO's are supposed to be clarifying statements of existing law. The zero king is trying legislate from the Oval Office, but then that is something the Left wants. If we ever get another conservative Prez, watch the "news" media go nuts on him/her on any EO they issue.
Dionne fails to explain why libs accused Bush of “shredding the Constitution” and acting unilaterally even though he issued fewer executive orders than both Clinton and Carter. If Dionne has an accurate point about Obama, then he must concede that the critique of Bush was also a falsehood.
I'll bet Kitty Graham would be squirming in her chair, to read this sequacious, toadying drivel. These guys' yingyangs are in Barky's pocket, and they have to know it.
They don’t call it the WAPO for nothing. It is the “Onion” for the mentally incompetent.
It's not the number, it's the subject of his executive orders.
That conservative president would be well-served to scoop up this Red Chorus like FDR did the Nisei, and pack them all off to Ulithi or Bikini or someplace ..... and then kinda forget they're there when he resumes atmospheric nuclear testing.
Oops.
It’s really something - making a whole career actually being paid to write mindless nonsense with absolutely no basis in fact.
And HOW is this not the truth?
one of the questions is NOT “how many” excecutive orders
Obama has issued versus some other president, but
in Obama’s case
how many such orders were not mere executive direction
in accordance with the laws that direection was given,
but how often the executive direction itself contravened
the authority given the executive in the legislation under which Obama was acting AGAINST, not in mere “interpretation” thereof
when the post refers to the GOP House not providing legislation, what the post really means that it had not provided legislation in agreement with what Obama said
would not be vetoed by him
as if, the House is somehow required to only pass legislation the executive wants
in sum, its a partisan screed from the post
