Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will reportedly propose a Pentagon budget that will shrink the U.S. Army to its smallest number since 1940 and eliminate an entire class of Air Force attack jets.
The New York Times reported late Sunday that Hagel's proposal, which will be released to lawmakers and the public on Monday, will call for a reduction in size of the military that will leave it capable of waging war, but unable to carry out protracted occupations of foreign territory, as in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Gotta admit that the larger the Army is the more tempting it is to get into protracted occupations. It’s obvious we would have had to occupy Iraq forever. Same goes for Afghanistan.
IMHO you appear short sided in your thinking. Protecting our country is one thing, our interests are another, as are our allies.
One example of protecting interests would be the US Navy which keeps shipping lanes open around the world.
China & Iran are two clear & present dangers. Speaking softly is fine as long as there's a big stick to back it up.
My idea of saving money would entail abolishing the TSA.

No one claimed our military was fascist. Reading comprehension is obviously a weak point with people that claim any cuts to the military means the sky will fall. Go back and read how the word ‘fascist’ was used.
Who said cuts in the military means we can no longer defend against nuclear subs or ICBM? Again, more Chicken Little “The sky is falling!” when it comes to defense cuts.
Liberals don’t want their pet spending cut and neither do you, so how are you two any different when it comes to spending?

P.S. Any government willing to create the TSA is willing to use that standing army against you in other ways.

You’re the one that doesn’t get it. No base or outpost can survive the onslaught of such forces as we faced with the Soviet Union. None. They were sacrificial. So, your viewpoint on this is moot.
Second, what happens when all your troops are overseas and then slaughtered leaving none at home? Such Mahan Doctrines are great when you wrote such a thing during a time when mass transit using aircraft wasn’t invented yet, not to mention nuclear weapons that can be delivered in mere minutes.

I guess this is what Obama was meaning when he told the Russian guy to wait till after the election and he had more flexibility. Yup, flexibility to cut the forced down to nothing to allow us to get over run. He will move to Iran or some muzzie nation because they will take him in.

Go read about the fantastic work our military has performed worldwide in humanitarian efforts. But never let your guard down before evil terrorists.
