SAN ANTONIO God must have had one heck of a powdered wig, or former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay would have made a lousy history teacher.
The Sugar Land Republican made news this week when he voiced his concern that the government is becoming secular because "we stopped realizing that God created this nation, that he wrote the Constitution, that it's based on biblical principles" during a recent television appearance with San Antonio Pastor Matt Hagee.
James Madison, the lead author of the United States Constitution and the fourth president of the United States who died in 1836, could not be reached for comment.

I think we got off the track when we allowed our government to become a secular government. When we stopped realizing that God created this nation, that he wrote the Constitution, that it's based on biblical principles.
The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.-- Alexander Hamilton
BTW, that quote is from Tom DeLay.
Not too many Christians would disagree with that basic premise
Does Hamilton think that God wrote the Constitution?
yah so all those Christians are still sitting on their hands
Do you think Madison and the others were really channeling God when they wrote the Constitution?
"Hello?"
"Hello. Yes. This is the Long Distance Operator. The 80s called. The want their Texas 22nd congressional district Representative back."
God DID write the Constitution. He had a pen in one hand and a BAR in the other.
You're making a straw man argument. The core principles enshrined in the founding documents of this country originate from the concept of Natural Law, which is written by God in the hearts of all men.
Do you care?
Which God did that? Humans have invented thousands of Gods.
I believe God directed the authors of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
I do also.
If God doesn’t exist, then he couldn’t have written the Constitution.
But if God does exist, he favors that which is good.

The DOI openly states rights are endowed by the creator. Many Founders, including James Wilson and Joseph Story, openly stated Christianity was a basis for the law.
So, yes, I think the Founders were thinking about God and the Bible when they wrote the Constitution. It is fair to say God inspired the constitution.
The real one -- the God the Bible, who the Founders repeatedly referenced.
