The NFL could be set for a radical rule change.
The new penalty, which will be automatic 15-yards if a player uses the N-word, is set to be introduced during the leagues owners meetings in March, according to a CBS Sports report.
John Wooten, who heads up the Fritz Pollard Alliance which pays attention to diversity in the NFL, says he expects the NFLs competition committee to suggest creating a rule penalizing players who use the N-word.
The rule would also include the potential for players to get ejected from the game, if they use the word a second time.
Wooten, who was at the NFL Combine on Friday, said he wants to completely erase the word from being used in the NFL.
"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do, he said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."
The NFL has yet to comment on Wootens idea, but he remains extremely hopeful the rule will be passed because there is too much disrespect in the game.
Ooooo a hate play.
The NFL has become a doooooshbag league.
Which is the way to many penalties?
You'll have to provide a map of some sort. A trail of breadcrumbs perhaps?
This move, along with the one announced a few months ago regarding penalties for profanity, is aimed at cleaning up the language on the field for the sole purpose of adding enhanced live-mike audio to NFL broadcasts. The ultimate application of this would be for NFL fans watching a game on television to have the option to select players on the field from their homes and listen to them during the game.
You can't have that sort of thing with all sorts of "n!ggas," "eff this," and "eff that" on the field.
What happens if the black homosexual football player is called a gay and racial slur? Is it one penalty or two? A suspension? Does one slur trump the other? Can instant replay verify this? Will we have a 30-minute delay to review a racial or sexual preference slur? /sarcasm, for the most part.
Political Correctness on the 50-yard line?....rudeness, taunting, name calling, is part of society, free or not...the only place such utterances are not common is in a Communist country or a Dictatorship. These PC Police don’t mean well; they mean to silence and cripple free people. Rude is Rude! Get over it.
Just for saying Washington Redskins???
This enhanced live mike onfield is ridiculous...There is no need or reason for a TV fan to hear what is said onfield....
Personally, I think the whole idea of wasting 3-4 hours of my life watching a football game on TV when I could be doing something more interesting and productive is ridiculous, too.
A lot of Black Players are going to be penalized. Some of these Black NFL players can’t go two sentences without using th N Word along with a couple of MF bombs.
They may have to invent a new kind of mouth guard that prevents them from using the Ni sound followed by the grr sound.
What a niggardly punishment.
Will czarina of linguistics Rachel Jentael will be on call to listen to the instant replays?
If the had an all white NFL that would eliminate the problem. I haven’t heard a white person use that word in decades.
It’s only 5 yards for “Cracker”.
There'll be a penalty alright...assessed to the team of the creepy ass cracker.
Second
Is that creepy-ass cracker or
Creepy ass-cracker?
It's advocacy. It's what the Fritz Pollard Alliance wants to happen. And saying they expect it to happen is a way of making it happen. Or maybe it's just a way of getting the Alliance's name in the papers.
I don't see it happening. Just banning one word without banning other racial slurs or insults, that is. A majority of the players in the NFL are African-American. Is there going to be a penalty when one player accuses another of "playing like a White girl"? I don't think so. And what is football without trash talk?
BTW, they ought to use "Fritz's" real name, Frederick Douglass Pollard. "Fritz Pollard Alliance" sounds too much like some neo-Nazi group.
I can hear Rush talking about this on his Monday show....
Of course it is. But in our PC world, you need to create "hate penalties" to go along with "hate crimes".
I remember when I was a kid, our gym teacher stressed sportsmanship above all else. Heaven help you if he ever caught you making what he called a "boo noise"!
How about a free 15 yards if the offensive team all yells out “Adam and Steve, not Adam and Eve!!” And “I’m gay and I’m proud”
