ROCKUMENTARY: FEBRUARY 22, 1964
#2 The Beatles: She Loves YouTake the time to listen to how McCartney constructs the song. Paul labored over his songs the way George Gershwin did a generation before, working hard to get just the right effect.

Some years back I read an essay by Ned Rorem discussing songs in which he analyzed, among other songs, "Michelle" by Paul McCartney. I have forgotten most of the substance of that essay, but he made an observation about an early key shift in the song that was telling and linked it musically to the works of Poulenc.
I'm not a Beatlemaniac, although many of their songs resonate strongly with me, but I was struck by that assertion on the part of Rorem.

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

What a week it was, Maestro! I remember how radical the Beatles' haircuts seemed at the time. Shortly thereafter, my contemporaries followed suit and it was not well received - particularly in the environment in which we then lived. Fifteen months later, I arrived back in the U.S. and I recall sitting in a hotel in San Fransisco watching TV with my family. The Byrds were on the tube - can't remember which song they were singing - possibly "Mr. Tambourine Man." I just remember being being amazed at the long hair and the pink specs worn by the lead singer.
