Meet the kinder, gentler Conservative Political Action Conference.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, snubbed last year after palling around with President Obama, is coming. So is GOProud, the gay rights group that was banned for the past few years amid noisy boycotts from critics and supporters. There's even a panel debating the merits of medical marijuana.
"CPAC is about finding conservative solutions to every challenge in America and not just saying 'no'," said Al Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union, which runs the conference in Washington, D.C. "We're determined to win the majority of American support."
The annual debate over CPAC's participants and focus reflects the broader, ongoing dialogue over growing the conservative movement and the Republican Party without compromising core principles. Gay rights are a major part of that debate, as conservative groups remain firmly opposed to gay marriage despite polls showing increasing and majority support.
The dispute with GOProud dates back to 2011, when a number of socially conservative groups, including the Heritage Foundation and the Family Research Council, objected to the group's involvement and declined to participate. Insults were traded between GOProud leaders and ACU board members, culminating in the group's exclusion.
Two former GOProud summer interns, Ross Hemminger and Matt Bechstein, took over last summer and sought to repair the bitterly frayed relationship. Under a compromise reached last week, they will attend the March 6-8 gathering as guests, without sponsorship or a booth. GOProud sees the lower-profile role as an important first step.
"We really just want to be part of the conservative movement," said Hemminger, a veteran of the losing Senate campaigns by Scott Brown and Gabriel Gomez in Massachusetts. "We want to establish a fruitful and respectful relationship."

Those of us that have ‘gay’ in their own families know first hand how ‘gay’ is the center of everything for them. And we know the damage it causes.
This ‘feel good’ nonsense about “I know conservative gay people” leaves out one important factor. They “Know” them superficially. They don’t “Know” what they are supporting. They think it’s all fuschia/fabulous interior decorating.
It ain’t. Gay is 24/7. And you either go with the program or be gutted from within.
Camel/nose/tent/done.
So, when the pop culture begins to mainstream incest and pedophilia, I guess CPAC will invite folks from those groups as well.
I really don’t know if it’s even possible for people to wake up anymore Onyx. I mean’ lets face it. They accepted a guy with a single digit conservative record, they make excuses for cronyism, they stand behind the Ryans, Rubios and Pauls despite their repeated push for illegal ‘rights’ and now CPAC has officially accepted gay after flirting with it a couple years back.
And STILL we have people thinking that the GOP and many so called ‘conservatives’ are actually worth supporting...that the Dem is worse.
The stupid in people burns like a magnesium fire.
...and we need his help WHY exactly?
If he REALLY wants to help, bring that winning formula of his over to the democrat side.....
I was thinking about going this year...guess not.
And the GOP move Left continues unabated.
NUTS
And that is EXACTLY how and why this is a death knell scenario. She and a few thousand like her did exactly that. Declared themselves Republican, infiltrated the Right and did exactly the kind of thins you described at the political level.
My Sister in Law was exactly the same way. They are mentally sick destroyers. And anyone that would help enable their insanity is no conservative. IMO they aren’t truly American is they crap all over everything America is supposed to be about.
Edit...”In that” they crap all over everything America is supposed to be about.
FUCPAC!!
I hear you. One of my sisters is a lesbian.
POWER CORRUPTS, BUT ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS, ABSOLUTELY.
C-pac corksmokers political action committee.
You are asking Conservatives when you should be asking if the gays can embrace our values and not try to jam their sins down our throats.
There is a huge blind spot among conservatives that develops when they ‘know someone’ gay. It suddenly changes their whole outlook and they start making every lib approved excuse for them rather than sticking to principle.
Even to the point of ‘acceptance’. But as you know, there is a huge difference between a ‘gay co worker’ or whatever and the knowledge that comes with truly KNOWING the person.
Why do they suddenly forget that AIDS is a gay disease that kills people? Why do they forget all the gay demands for ‘the right to contribute to the blood supply’ via donation that WILL kill innocent people? Why do they forget that there is a hugely disproportionate number of Pedos in the ‘gay community” who are currently trying to mainstream their mental illness? Do these people not care about the access to their children?
I don’t think there is much on the planet worse than that. And yet ‘conservatives’ are supposed to welcome those things? Because it isn’t some rare thing. It’s mainstream “gay” stuff that comes with their ...votes.
> Can we attract their votes without watering down our values?
If you think about it for just a few minutes, you will see that the answer is no.
Their agenda is hostile to our way of life.
They are not just “live and let live”.
They are just as Stalinist as the 0bama they hate.
Not when the Republicans support and vote for the identical things we loathe the Dems for Onyx. Think about it.
The Dem is up front. The Pub tells you he’s your friend and then knifes your back. Which is worse again?
Establish your FRUITful relationships with your peers, not conservative organizations.
But this is not to be.
Within two election cycles, the Gay Rights stealth activists will control CPAC....like they successful stealthed the Boy and Girl Scouts, the RNC, the American Olympic squad of envoys, etc., etc. and so forth.
