OXFORD, Miss. The FBI on Tuesday was helping investigate who tied a noose around the neck of a University of Mississippi statue of James Meredith, who, in 1962, became the first black student to enroll in the then all-white Southern college.
University police on Sunday morning found the rope noose and, on the statues face, a pre-2003 Georgia state flag with a Confederate battle symbol, said campus police Chief Calvin Sellers. Two men were seen near the statue early Sunday and investigators were looking at surveillance footage.
Its a racial hate crime, Mississippi NAACP president Derrick Johnson said Tuesday after a news conference at the state Capitol. At what level do they get prosecuted? I dont know. But as long as we tolerate hate, we will continue to revisit history and the past of this state, and at some point we must move forward.

Number of Englishmen hanged during the reign of Henry VIII: more than 70,000
Number of black Americans lynched during the era of Jim Crow: less than 2,000.
Now remind me again which race has more right to be intimidated by a noose.

They need to determine the whereabouts of one Madonna Constantine.

Well, this being a college you can’t rule out a drunken student thinking this would be funny. Nothing good happens after midnight.

Ole Miss is an open campus, and any trouble maker, like a democrat politician, could have easily done this. They are certain to know that they will not get the blame.

Well, one thing we know — no black man was ever lynched by a Republican.

The FBI?!?!?
I’d love to know exactly why. At most, isn’t this small time vandalism?

I cannot remember any incident like this where the perpetrator was not a teen.
Recent history proves you wrong. Such campus incidents have been perpetrated by black adult students or angry black administrators and "professors"..........

The FBI is helping investigate? That is ridiculous. No federal law was violated. The federal government needs to shrink.
To: Responsibility2nd
How can tying a noose around a statue be a hate crime? Or a crime of any kind? Nothing was damaged. And why the hell is this a matter for the FBI anyway?

The perpetrator could be some liberal/leftist angry with James Meredith because he was on the staff of Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC).

Bet he won’t be singing that tune if the perpetrator turns out to be black.

I am betting this will turn out to be some liberal hoax perpetrated by some aggrieved group as previously stated or by some idiots from “That School Beneath Us” (Mississippi State). What gives it away is the Georgia Flag. People that attended Ole Miss and frequent football games and partying in the Grove will know what I mean. One can't find a Confederate Battle Flag for sale anywhere in Oxford or displayed publicly. They are definitely looked down upon by Alumni and the Inter-fraternity Council just because of overreaction like this. Just wait and see. I am a member of the Alumni Association and will be donating to the reward tomorrow. HOTTY TODDY!!!!
