NEW YORK - Writer Jen Singer, the mother of two teenage boys, wrestles with her grocery list every week to keep the household budget from getting away from her.
"I'd like the government to stop by my house, come food shopping with me and see where the real costs are," she said.
The adage "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is impossible thanks to apple prices, she said.
"We go through one of these every few days," she said, holding a loaf of bread. "It's a big part of my take home pay."

I’ve seen you dance on the head of this pin a thousand times. If you want to pay more for goods, foreign or domestic, then just pay. Or cut an additional check to the Treasury. “We need to balance our budget, and take in more money,” after all.

I am saying we should consider one flat fee, and that one flat fee is charged to EVERYTHING IMPORTED into our country.

As an aside, perhaps we can DROP taxation on things made in America, at the same time.

America needs to stop giving away our national riches.
Raising taxes on imports just hurts the consumer even more than now. More inflation.
The govt simply needs to get out of the economy. American businesses are over-taxed and over-regulated, and the government props up the least efficient.

You list commodities prices with tiny decreases? We're interested here in the prices on the shelf -- the prices consumers pay, the prices we pay. Other than coffee, due to a particularly good harvest last year, I haven't seen much going down. Have you?
Yes... they increased the gore school tax and expanded it to cover welfare phones. I call it theft.
I have a Dollar General near me; they really aren’t a bargain, but just have lower prices for smaller packages. I rarely see people doing full shopping trips there (though they have everything - just not a wide variety); most people (including me) seem to use it just for individual items forgotten on “real” shopping trips at Wally World or a full supermarket.

Sure; I understand. The gubmint has also been low-balling inflation to keep COLA adjustments down for SS recipients and such. Our retirees are going to suffer the same fate as Soviet pensioners...
Anyone else notice package sizes going down but the price remaining the same? I have paying the same price for less.

I make my own bread, I use a 100# of flour a year, cost a few years ago $26 and change, now about $37 and change.
What happened? I thought we were all supposed to be worried about ‘climate change’ and buying health insurance for 30,000,000 unfortunates. I guess food isn’t a problem for the 47% with all those gov’t EBT cards.

We buy flour in bulk as well. The cost of the gluten free mixes for bread, cookies and stuff is exhorbitant. The prepared stuff is even more outrageous. I often wonder who actually buys that stuff. And whether or not they’re actually paying for it or if the rest of us are paying those prices.
Absolutely. I’m finding my largest expense anymore is from the grocery store and I’m not happy about it.
