NEW YORK - Writer Jen Singer, the mother of two teenage boys, wrestles with her grocery list every week to keep the household budget from getting away from her.
"I'd like the government to stop by my house, come food shopping with me and see where the real costs are," she said.
The adage "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is impossible thanks to apple prices, she said.
"We go through one of these every few days," she said, holding a loaf of bread. "It's a big part of my take home pay."

At first I was surprised that this topoc was written up in the MSM.
Then I remembered that “economic inequality” is one of the two major Dem campaign themes this year.
Bring back jobs to America.
Just saying.
People will vote for politicians who support Americans.
Americans want to work.
GOP bring back American jobs. Now. Don’t wait for dems to seize this issue.

Give me three specific policy inititiatives to accomplish your goal. None of them may be longer than 20 words.
Food prices have been rising for the last 6 years, and it’s been in spurts and not always the same thing obviously.
The commodity prices may not be rising as drastically, but the finished goods for the most part have risen dramatically at one point or another over the last 6 years.
I’m not even factoring in the “hidden” inflation due to portion shrinkage. For example, look at a simple microwave Burrito in the frozen food section and you will find a much, MUCH smaller version than what you got a few years ago at a slowly increasing price. Up until recently, that same smaller Burrito was stuffed inside the old wrapper which was made for something 3 times its size and I got a good laugh out of that.
Jen Singer... you were probably eating steak twice a week under Bush... and you probably voted for obama.
Jen just needs to get some EBT and she’ll be eatin’ jus fine.
How about just one:
Raise taxes on imports. All imports. One flat fee, on every single thing imported into America.
Food. Oil and gas. Manufactured goods.
The question is what percentage to charge, in taxes. We should charge everything imported into the United States one flat fee.
We are 17.25 trillion in debt. And growing. Fast.
We cannot continue this way. Our entire country will collapse.
I’m serious.
Bring back American jobs.
It doesn’t matter if the commodity price of sugar, wheat, and soybeans is down YOY. With increased transportation and production costs, the price of the end product - a loaf of bread, a pack of cookies, etc. is UP, way up.
Last year, this time, I was able to buy two loaves of BJ’s brand bread for 1.99. This year, the same exact product costs 2.69. That’s a 35% increase in the price of a loaf of bread YOY. Huge increase.

You’re absolutely right; a while back somebody posted a picture of two rolls of toilet paper (same brand) in which the width shrinkage was impossible to miss...

Those taxes are called “tariffs”, and they are specifically mentioned in the Constitution. So you get a point for that.
Now please tell me exactly how much more you think Americans should pay for a gallon of gasoline since you mentioned oil specifically. Is another dollar enough, not enough, or too much?
How much more should a banana cost? Should we raise it to the cost of a gallon of gasoline? Remember, you said it should be a “flat” fee. Should a pound of bananas cost exactly the same as a gallons of gas?

I don’t believe that; for many Americans work is the only thing putting distance between them and unassimilated minority malcontents. In my area, the jobs “Americans won’t do” aren’t even offered to Americans.

I forgot that one. Just near the end of last year I discovered the same thing. Had an old roll of TP that I sat a new roll next to and the difference in size was startling.
And in the meantime, the prices slowly continue to creep up...
