U.S. Sen. John Cornyn unveiled legislation in Longview on Sunday to give agencies that are battling sex trafficking a funding source in their effort to return young women to normal life.
Its been called, I think properly, modern-day slavery, the Texas Republican said at a news conference at the Longview Police Department.
In introducing the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, Cornyn and Police Chief Don Dingler were joined by leaders of four leader organizations who said they lack options when a sex slave is taken off the street.
We have to do more than that, said Norma Mullican of Palestine, who plans a safe home called Refuge of Light. We want to do it the right way.
Mullican, whose nonprofit group is called Voice to End Slavery, said the group has raised $460,000 to build its safe home but lacks money to run it. Similar homes across the country spend $175 to $225 a day per child, she said, estimating Refuge of Light will cost at least $400,000 a year to operate.
So were thrilled with this piece of legislation, she said.
The bill, which is being sponsored in the U.S. House of Representatives by Kingwood Republican Ted Poe, funnels fees from prosecution of sex traffickers into a fund from which law enforcement and anti-sex trade agencies can draw.
Organizations like these here today have done a great job, Cornyn said. They operate mostly off of donations. This legislation is to provide a pool of funds for grants

So...I’m guessing this Sex Slave Safe House is in Texas?
Looks like Cornyn is falling back on that old tried-n-true tactic - douse the homefires with raw cash.
He thinks this is at the top of the list of Americans pressing problems.
Cornyn trying to change the subject because he doesn’t want to talk about his cloture votes for Obama’s Stimulus, ObamaCare, Amnesty and the Debt Ceiling.
Well, that’s a given here. I was just surmising that he’s trying to change the subject with copious infusions of money, money, mo’money.
John Cornyn, just spreadin’ some of our wealth around.
This ^^^
Now THERE’s a brave stand to be taking!
Next he will say he is against slavery in general
Isn’t the sex trade fueled by the invasion from Mexico? Maybe Cornyn should get with the conservative program and demand that the border be closed and invaders sent home.
My first - and second - read of this headline led me to think that Sen. Cornyn was going to use federal money to increase competition in the Texas baudy house market.
Cornyn’s now got an entry up on Facebook about this event. Comments are not running to the soon-to-be-former Senator’s advantage.
One article mentioned that the money would possibly come from the sex traffickers. In Houston the lesbian mayor is making strip joints pony up big money for it (in addition to the rape tax she wanted on admissions).
Meanwhile who is doing anything to stop the importation of illegal immigrant sex slave workers from south of the border and Asia???
Just as Kinky Friedman is running for Agriculture Commissioner with a "legalize pot" platform (even though he cannot do that from that office) and George P. Bush is running for Land Commissioner on an anti-abortion, anti-Obamacare platform.
This would seem to be the perfect community problem for churches to band together and address. It isn’t a federal issue.
I will bring this up at the risk of looking foolish.
It’s possible that the international sex slavery issue is another in a long series if crises that turns out to be overblown. This may be why some of the other lawmakers aren’t on board with him. Of course sex slavery exists. But does it exist in the numbers we’ve been led to believe? Seattle Weekly did a cover story on this in response to the well-meaning Ashton Kutcher and then-wife Demi Moore who were crusading on the issue. Since SW was at that time owned by Village Voice and ran the infamous BackPage ads, the article was pretty quickly discredited, dismissed as self-serving and agendized to protect a big source of revenue. ( They also made some cheap personal shots at Ashton Kutscher that I didnt like) But I think that their point may have had some validity that got lost in the shuffle. How many times have people gotten us all excited about some crisis—health, nutritional, environmental, the Homeless counts(padded), Satanic ritual abuse, daycare child abuse, Superbowl domestic abuse, heterosexual AIDS, etc? I’m not saying that these things weren’t problems( though in the case if Satanic ritual abuse in families, they’ve had a tough time finding even one), I’m just saying that the numbers may be off. And I certainly agree that REAL immigration “reform” would be a good way if addressing this. (Don’t just look at Mexico and its neighbors. either. In this area, illegal immigrant prostitution offenders have been from far Eastern Pacific rim countries.) Mr. Cornyn may have good intentions, but is putting himself in the same category with politicians who spend and make policy based on global warming scares.
I understand that there are plenty of prostitutes and pimps around, certainly here in Everett there are, but as the SW piece pointed out, the number that is underage and/or being held against his/her will may be grossly over exaggerated.
John has been pushing a lot of popular legislation lately but unfortuantely for him, its too little too late:

Wow - Cornyn is a self-appointed champion of women’s rights - surely Texans can see that they need to keep him.....
I believe it’s too late for Cornyn to save his own butt.
