Letter upsets city's Black History Month

Black History Month in Baltimore is a busy, busy time. Every aspect of black life in this city is remembered and celebrated: Black schools. Black music. Black movies. Black churches. Black literature. Black clothing. Black politicians. Even black trains.

Then Tracey Halvorsen had to go and spoil it all: She wrote an article about crime in Baltimore. How she and her mostly white neighbors live in fear. And no one seems to care. Or worse, lots of people think it is normal. “Baltimore City,You Are Breaking My Heart,” is going viral for an on-line magazine called Medium.com. A few quotes:

“I’m tired of being looked at like prey.”

“I’m tired of thinking about the horrifying final moments for 51 year old neighbor, Kim Leto, stabbed to death in her own home by two teenagers.”

“I’m tired of wondering why city leaders haven’t said s*** about recent horrific murders committed by children in supposedly ‘safe’ neighborhoods.”

“I’m tired of living next to a beautiful park that I’m scared to walk into at any time of day, thanks to regular stories of day-time muggings, drug dealing and gang violence.”

Going back to the 50s, whites fled cities for the ‘burb, forfeiting our great cities.

And that forfeit is partly our fault (the white middle class). When blacks began to buy homes and move into neighborhoods, many whites fled in panic before bothering to find out what their new neighbors were really like. Most of the new arrivals were business people, workers in pretty well paid occupations, the occasional lawyer or doctor, folks with the down payment and the qualifications to get a mortgage. It wasn't that easy back in the 50s, some of you will remember. This was before the drug explosion, section 8, welfare, etc.

But the white flight was an opportunity for absentee owner investors to buy properties at bargain prices and make a good buck on rentals. And when the Great Society welfare/section 8 stuff heated up, since they didn't have to live there they went with the flow. That was the beginning of the end.

Buddy and I were discussing how the weather seemed pretty bad around here and Russia was like Spring, for the Winter Olympics.

What is not mentioned, is that Soichi is in the far south of Russia, same latitude as Spain and Italy. Wrong place for Winter Olympics. Different parts of Russia have different weather, same as the U.S.A. Here on the west coast, we have Mediterranean style weather. Not everything is black or white, except this article which highlights the fear when everything goes dark.

Sochi’s climate is classified as ‘humid subtropical’. Average February highs are around 50 degrees, with lows above freezing. Elevation is around 300 ft. Mountains and snow are 20-30 miles away.

She's looked upon as prey because she is. Lions don't pick on things that can kill them. They look for prey that can be easily, and safely, killed and eaten. They go after the weak; the ones who can't fight back. Some thug on the street looking at her sees weakness. Of course, there's a small chance that she's armed, but it's a vanishingly small chance. There are only a few hundred carry permits issued in the State of Maryland. There's a 1 in 8473 chance that she's the dangerous one in the herd. That young lion knows, with 99.988% certainty, that he can safely chow down on her.

Now of course, it's highly unlikely that she's the type of person who would arm herself. She probably considers a "rape whistle" to be overly aggressive. But that's not how concealed carry works for people like her.

Concealed carry protects everyone by decreasing the young lions' level of confidence. In shall issue States and localities, somewhere between 2% and 5% of the adult population will apply for permits. When the odds of meeting a "safe" victim decrease from 99.988% to 96%, the business of being a young lion gets a little more dicey. 96% may seem like good odds, but the point of securing prey like the author is to get money to get high; not to get into a gunfight. At some point, the risk becomes too high and the lion learns to become a jackal instead. He scavenges (i.e. commits property crimes) rather than make his own kills. So unless she goes about with a sandwich board reading "I'M NOT ARMED", she gets mistaken for one of the dangerous members of the heard and she gets left alone.

If she's wondering what else she could be doing to improve her city, she should note that her State gets an A- from the anti-gun lobby for its gun laws. She should be working to change that. She should be trying to make her State more like Wyoming.

They don't have that lion problem in Wyoming, by the way.

I think everyone has some preconceived notions that don't reflect reality. I always thought the White House was surrounded by opulence and well-to-do white folks - until I visited DC. My cousin picked a hotel a few blocks away from the White house. The front desk warned us not to go out alone at night - into the hallways! Yes, guests had been mugged in the hallways by outsiders. At night we looked out the windows and saw roving gangs of blacks, and police cars lit up doing their thing. During day, ghetto buildings nearby. We checked out and went to Georgetown, difference of $10/night but safe among whites. That was during Clinton's reign, maybe it's better now (unless it's worse).

The thing is IMHO is not the black people moving in, its their friends and relatives who cause the trouble when they come to visit or stay awhile. They have no investment in the ‘hood so they don’t care.
