A 70-year-old nurse, who was described by her co-worker as a sweet old lady, was knocked to the floor and beaten repeatedly in the head until she was unconscious. The attacker was the patient for whom she was caring.
On Friday afternoon, Evelyn Lynch was taking out the catheter of 40-year-old Kwincii Jones as she was preparing to discharge him from Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY. Police reported that Jones struck the nurse on the head and kicked her in the face, causing serious injuries. I actually hear she was a sweet old lady, a Brookdale employee told CBS 2. Thats why its a little weird to me because I dont know why it would happen. Its not like she was mean or anything like that.

Nurse Ima Ratchet graciously demonstrates the proper procedure for quick catheter removal. **Medical Assistant Instructions; Play Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand (Evergreen Era) or Barry Manilow (B-Side Collections) music saved on an I-Pod. Play this music one hour prior to your procedure, in order to fully anesthetize your patient. Works everytime. Have band-aids and sweet Bubble Gum within easy reach to dispense to the patient immediately after their catheter removal. Administer One Double Bourbon (Neat) by mouth. Patient will sleep joyfully and without pain!

Yes, the voice of experience speaking, going out is not nearly as painful as going in. The patient had already experienced it going in, so the pain should have been much less. As some have pointed out, if the balloon which anchored the catheter in the bladder was not deflated it would have been exquisitely painful, if not severely injurious. But, unless it was deliberate, justifying the attack on the nurse, no.

It is only painful when not properly lubricated. It was always painful to me, albeit less so if lubricated. Newer model catheters are said to be much improved.
