Helicopter parents, professors who aim to please, the dumbing down of standards in courses and decreasing curriculum requirements have succeeded in reducing our young workforce to a no-discipline, no-talent pool of job seekers. Harsh words for sure but a generation out there is desperately in need of a reality check.
As a small-business employer, I have seen a disturbing downward talent drift in job candidates most acutely in the past five years. When a job candidates first question is about vacation days or benefits, we know we have encountered collateral damage from the teachers and parents who believed in softening the learning experience. Armed with a meaningless bachelors degree from colleges and universities that allowed majors in non-core subjects, we see youngsters who cannot write, research or think analytically. Their lack of discipline is evident in job applications filled with typos and cover letters that reveal no interest in teamwork or service rather, they emphasize their high opinion of themselves. (Many young job seekers come forward with an executive attitude that is backed by zero capabilities).
To heap insult on injury, this generation is unable to face criticism or negative evaluations. Having been shielded from the hardships of tough educational standards, they require praise and positivity no matter how superficial their work and dedication may be. Recently, George Washington University Medical School offered faculty the opportunity to attend a lecture on how to work with millenials. It has come to this: They cannot perform, so it falls to employers to figure out how best to save their careers.
As someone who has worked with countless extraordinarily hard-working and skilled young people over the years, the dearth of college graduates with any ability is fear-inducing....

I would also like to hear some confirmation of that. I am sure the Corps has "evolved" a bit over the decades since I went through MCRD, but that is just beyond belief.
I did witness the ceasing of DI's being allowed to physically assault recruits during my time in MCRD. Had one genius hop the fence at Edson Range and try to hitch a ride north on I5 only to be picked up by a DI coming to work. Apparently he cried about how hard one DI was on him.
Said DI was a bit over the top, but we loved him (he was crazy with the stuff he had us do, but another story) was soon removed from the platoon.
We all checked it off to them deciding to take in draftees that soon wrote letters home whining how hard it all was and how unfair. We volunteers wanted no part of that crap, good thing there were no draftees in our platoon.
iows....she schmoozzed her way thru that course...it wasn't black and white and yes or no...it was anything in between that was acceptable....
The millennials who read this are going to be pissed. It does not praise them enough. It’s not fair to comment on their lack of skill and integrity.
That said, we are foolish to lump and entire generation into this evaluation. Let the shoe fit. Keep looking for the best.
I agree except that the illegals are not de facto slaves. They do quite well working under the table, Momma’s got the full welfare ride and Jose works for cash. They take home more than me.
I think that's a big factor:
When you're not given any incentive to work, and indeed your effort is irrelevant to success, it tends to dampen your drive. That is certainly the case where we are, with respect to government: the bailouts, government choosing winners and losers, means that your actual work doesn't matter.
In fact, you could make a fairly strong case that male attributes are denigrated, that 'maleness' is almost defacto 'guilt' [of some sort] in our society. I mean, have you tried to rectify one contraconstitutional law locally (I have, multiple states) — the desire for logical consistency in the law makes you "seem unstable", or "a troublemaker", or "nuisance" who wants to rock the boat… it's also great that you're not allowed to challenge the law's legitimacy w/o violating it [and thus forcing you to the weak position of the accused].
Would not be surprised at all. My oldest son was giving interviews for a position in his technical firm. One interviewee, a Stanford grad, actually brought his parents. He was not hired.
I remember reading that one of the founders of paypal went to an exclusive private high school and a college in Vermont that only has an enrollment of 200, and all graduates become wealthy.
so I guess the plan is keep the masses stupid and that very small percentage our rulers.

Our company has three interns this semester. From what I've seen so far, there's one I would hire without reservation, one who may prove himself yet, and one who seems entirely hopeless.
yes. i run a large computer system that pays and handles a lot of stuff but not so much in interfaces. I’ve had Big no longer 8” consultants come in and want to interview me about my system. I point to the disk drive where i have my documentation stored. Flow charts and stuff. My instructions are usually read the manuals learn the system then i’ll meet with you. Many just quit.
Brutal honesty gets me in trouble a lot.
I was trained by my parents from the time i could walk.
When I got out of grammer school I had more experience and knowledge than the useless kids coming out of college today.
There are also a lot of suburban mothers who are busy training their kids to be future leaders of the planet and don’t make their kids get real genuine work experience. They’re the ones that don’t like to see their precious spud face a judge if they commit and crime and prefer their little weasels to remember how special they are. It’s not just working mothers.

That’s a good reason to steer clear.
That said, I’d like to buy a handful of 18 to 25 yr olds for what they are worth and sell them for what they think they are worth. (*No, I do not condone slavery and am not a racist, although my wife would say I am extreme.)

Been there, done that.
Recently I had to let a talented 24-year-old go. He had the ability but not the work ethic. He would show up late, leave early, extend his lunch break, dressed sloppy and he constantly had to be told to take the earplugs out of his ear - he was either making personal phone calls or listening to music when he was supposed to be working. He saw nothing wrong with taking a "sick" day just about every other week. The excuses for missing work were endless. Always some aunt or cousin dying, a car problem or some other drama. The final straw was when we found him playing video games on this company computer. He never did understand why we had a problem with that sort of thing.
Kids and teens have so much energy and a lot of them would LOVE to work and have a good time doing it and building their own small businesses. The real problems come from when the regulations are insane, the endless problems with genuine lunatics running the street, and the nonstop leeching from the IRS and US government that keeps demanding more and more pay from workers in the form of taxes.
As for the illegals, throw them out and you’ll see American kids running to fill out an application.
