Government to require vehicle-to-vehicle communication as safety measure [Big Gov't Knows Best]
News Herald ^ | 2/3/14 | Dana Hull

In a move that signals a great technological leap forward for the auto industry, the federal government announced Monday that it will take steps to require all new cars and light trucks to communicate with each other, with the hopes of drastically reducing the total of more than 30,000 vehicle deaths each year.

The technology, known as “vehicle-to-vehicle” or “V2V,” gives cars the ability to “talk” to each other and exchange safety data such as speed and position. If a nearby car abruptly changes lanes and moves into another car’s blind spot, the car would be alerted. The technology relies on vehicles repeatedly sending wireless signals to each other via a dedicated short-range radio network

This is none of the federal government's business. Also, this is RIPE for privacy invasions.

We need a Congress with BALLS to keep the bureaucracy small and in check.

If thought ObamaCare was bad, just wait until the government controls the brake and gas pedal on your car.

I see an unmitigated disaster in my crystal ball.

Who the Hell gave the DoT statutory authority to tamper with my brakes?

“V2V”. Isn’t that cute. These nanny staters are so smart and creative.

I agree, I don’t like this at all.

I like the idea. Somebody cuts me off and my car automatically sends their car the Ping of Death.

This is to establish Vehicle to vehicle communication so when it is in place your car can be interrogated by Police vehicles to determine if you have been speeding.
And of course they'll just mail you the ticket.

I’m currently driving a 12 year-old car. I expect to keep it at least five more years. Keeping the old, non-smart cars with very few black boxes running is the only way to keep the government out of your business. Check out PAYD or pay-as-you-drive. It’s a government backed insurance initiative to charge people based on a perception of what constitutes reasonable driving. An occasional long trip can raise your rates as well as populate a folder about where you went.

This ability will require cars to be much “smarter” than they are currently. Such technology will EASILY lend itself
to abuse by Big Brother in so many ways it’s hard to imagine
them all. If it has a computer....and anything “smart” does, it can be hacked, hijacked and controlled by hostile
parties.

So many problems with this. Bugs in the system. Hackers in the system. Slick roads, computer apples too much brake or steering. Legacy vehicles nearby the computer is unaware of. Anyone knowing where you are at at all times. Jerks reprogramming their system to command everyone nearby to move right and slow down, thus clearing a path for the guy who thinks he’s special.

I never liked the automatic front car head lights that go on with no over-ride to turn them off.

Ironically I think this makes it impossible for cop cars to hide in the dark with their lights off and their engines on(when its cold or hot outside), unless they put in special over-rides.

Several models have a version of this already in that it alerts the driver when
other vehicles get into your blind spots, slows closing rate, etc. This however
isn’t communicated to the other vehicle which apparently what this new program
will do. More gov’t dictates.

I’m a software guy. I see an opportunity here. I am going to look into getting savvy on engine and vehicle management computers (almost took a job in that field a few years back). I see a market for “rooted” vehicles that don’t track position, or report false positions, who scrape/collect other vehicle’s data, impersonate other vehicles... This could be my retirement plan. Seriously.

NSA hacking opening for our vehicles. Perhaps his opponents will be involved in mysterious pileups or the Muzz Brotherhood will detonate fuel tanks
