In 2013, the US lost 30 people a day to gun violence. Obama shouldn't let us forget

The president should be talking about guns (and gun control) a lot more. This goes way beyond horrific school shootings.

President Obama opened his remarks at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee with a brief mourning of the death of a student there on Tuesday, the day of his State of the Union speech. Obama mentioned gun violence once in his address to the nation. Again yesterday, the bulk of his speech was about education policy, not gun control.

The fact that McGovock was itself the site of a gun fatality only gave a glancing emphasis on the firearm policies he says he is trying to move forward. The setting perhaps emphasized just as much the futility of the rhetorical gesture. President Obama needs to talk more about gun policies in this country, but he has to do it differently. As horrific as school shootings are, gun violence takes more lives outside our classrooms than in them.

In the five years of Obama's presidency, mass shootings have been the one reliable catalyst for a presidential push on our nation's uniquely liberal firearm laws. He broke a three-year streak of non-engagement on the issue in January 2011, after the shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and 17 other people in Tucson, Arizona, giving one speech and writing one op-ed calling for more legislation. Then, the White House was for the most part silent for another 10 months, until Newtown. That tragedy brought a flurry of urgent officials pleas: 18 sets of remarks in five months, according to C-SPAN. After that, another season of silence, until the Naval Yard shootings in September 2013....

It’s at the point where only hard core liberal anti gun nuts think they can win and even Colorado can’t change their minds. Liberals lose every time they try a big “ban guns” push.

That doesn’t mean that saner minds should be complacent but fight any effort by the insane to ban guns or anything else for that matter.

Take out the black on black murders then get back with the stats?

And take out suicides, and drunk idiots who shoot themselves while goofing around with their guns, and criminals shot by law abiding gun owners...

In the latest year, WISQARS (CDC) data shows:

19,390 suicide by firearm. (1079 blacks)
606 fatal accident by firearm. (113 blacks)
11,062 homicide by firearm (including justifiable). (6148 blacks).

If blacks are 10% of the population, they use guns for suicide about half as often as expected, have fatal accidents less than double the expected rate, and are murdered at about ten times the expected rate of non-blacks.

Prohibition? Good recent data is hard to find -- probably because the answer is too embarrassing. A 1994 Department of Justice report suggested that between a third and a half of U.S. homicides were drug-related. I'll go out on a limb and conclude that these murders occur mostly in neighborhoods where drug use is prevalent.

These gun nazis like to throw figures around, but never bother to provide context. You would think from the author’s statement that 30 random, innocent people are killed each day by violent strangers with guns. However, statistically speaking:

- about 50% of gun deaths are suicide;
- Well over 50% of the remaining gun-related killings are gang-on-gang violence;
- most of the rest are related to domestic violence or non-gang related criminal activity;
- only a small fraction of gun-related killings are an innocent person being killed.

Yeah, that sounds like Archie. Funny thing is, Normal Lear, Carol O’Conner, and probably the rest of the cast thought they’d make Conservatives look like yahoos. Well, to a point they did, but strangely enough most folks found themselves siding with Archie.

Well, the GOPe has pretty well made that the early 21st Century thing to watch concerning government in D.C. They just don’t grasp what Conservatism is, even if it’s merely bedrock Constitutional Republicanism.
