How the GOP Lost Middle America

Out of the Republican retreat on Maryland’s Eastern shore comes word that the House leadership is raising the white flag of surrender on immigration.

The GOP will agree to halt the deportation of 12 million illegal aliens and sign on to a blanket amnesty. It only asks that the 12 million not be put on a path to citizenship.

Sorry, but losers do not dictate terms. Rich Trumka of the AFL-CIO says amnesty is no longer enough. Illegal aliens must be put on a path to citizenship and given green cards to work – and join unions.

Rep. Paul Ryan and the Wall Street Journal are for throwing in the towel. Legalize them all and start them on the path to citizenship.

A full and final capitulation. Let’s get it over with.

To understand why and how the Republican Party lost Middle America, and faces demographic death, we need to go back to Bush I.

At the Cold War’s end, the GOP reached a fork in the road. The determination of Middle Americans to preserve the country they grew up in suddenly collided with the profit motive of Corporate America.

The Fortune 500 wanted to close factories in the USA and ship production abroad – where unions did not exist, regulations were light, taxes were low, and wages were a fraction of what they were here in America.

Corporate America was going global and wanted to be rid of its American workforce, the best paid on earth, and replace it with cheap foreign labor.

While manufacturing sought to move production abroad, hotels, motels, bars, restaurants, farms and construction companies that could not move abroad also wanted to replace their expensive American workers.

Thanks to the Republican Party, Corporate America got it all.

U.S. factories in the scores of thousands were shut down, shedding their American workers. Foreign-made goods poured in, filling U.S. stores and killing the manufacturers who had stayed behind, loyal to their U.S. workers.

The Reagan prosperity was exported to Asia and China by the Bush Republicans. And the Reagan Democrats reciprocated by deserting the Bush Republican Party and going home. But this was not the end of what this writer described in his 1998 book, “The Great Betrayal.”

As those hotels, motels, restaurants, bars, fast-food shops, car washes, groceries and other service industries also relished the rewards of cheap foreign labor, they got government assistance in replacing their American workers. snip

I voted for Bush 1, but if I could go back in time, I would vote for Perot.

I did; thought it would teach the Republicans something.

It didn't, and we got Clinton.

Sorry, America...

We need another Perot or Buchanan who puts America before the rest of the world.

Oh?

How many have we been given; prior to primary voting?

We want perfection in our leaders. I don't think we are gonna get it...

“Since 1990, some 30 to 40 million immigrants, legal and illegal, have entered the country.

Sorry folks; but the elephant in the room has even HIGHER numbers: 55,000,000.

Fifty five MILLION Americans have been KILLED by Choice; and here we are; whining about foreign invaders pouring over our borders.

Are you still killing your unborn?

I don’t know what is being said elsewhere but everyone I talk to...Hispanics (citizens), Democrats, you name it in my area the response is “we need to take care of our people before we worry about other countries and their people” any conservative politicians need to use that to counter this.

But images like this convince us to...

In the context of illegal immigration, the emphasis should be upon Mexico to get its act together.

I am ecstatic that for the first time in my 14 years here you can post Pats stuff without being harpie pack attacked as a Jew hater....he makes sense on culture....not on Israel but I sure don’t think calling him Nazi is fair

But the problem is about more than illegals and legal immigrants voting left....and they do...around 80%

Its about the fact that due to entitlements ...groups ...citizens....blacks and poorer whites who formerly did 7-11 dollar an hour work won’t do it now

I develop.... I hire contractors and subs and insist every effort made to use legals

Here in middle TN it is almost impossible to get bricklayers...landscapers....roofers....,.concrete men....forms and gradebeam and footings guys without some Mexicans

I see parts of the country where you still can and when I grew up blacks did it

Buy here....it is a challenge

A simple migrant worker come and go program like old fruit picker days maybe?

Or raise minimum wage...ugh

Or end entitlements of up to 2000 a month in tax free freebies ....a tall order

We really have allowed a mess here

Perot was secretly allied with B. Clinton.

If the GOP had picked Ross in the primaries; I doubt we'd be having this conversation today.

They HAVE it together!!

You don’t see Mexico paying folks to NOT work!

Mexico is a big COWBIRD (look it up) allowing an Eagle to hatch it’s eggs.

They WOULD; but they don't HAVE to!

We pay them NOT to work and then wonder why they don't WANT to work!

So... who's the fool?

Cowbird, very good. (I did look it up :)

But of course, that’s not what I meant by Mexico having it’s act together.

I know, but to complain because a nation allows some of it's problems to leave it's borders seems futile to me.

"The poor will ALWAYS be with you.", is, it seems, universal.

Yeah, I busted yer balls earlier about the bros, but I agree with your point about speaking unimpeded... I prefer the color of language but unfortunately it gets people in knots...

Buchanan’s opinion is worthy of attention.

Respect is meaningless in a system without toil.

Your fighting a ghost enemy, the last war, a boogeyman that died a long time ago. The Union stranglehold on MANUFACTURING died a long time ago. Only 10% ( and falling ) of the MANUFACTURING labor force is in a union and they have almost no clout due to R-T-W laws and small numbers. The off shoring that is done now is destroying our manufacturing base and non union jobs - Reagan Democrats.

The AVERAGE IQ of a typical Mexican is 87. We are importing the Mexican lower classes which are probably to the left of that average. So we're f-ed....

“Middle Americans” in the rust belt without any skills wound up doing low paying service industry jobs, and many are now having children out of wedlock. Pat speaks for a world and a people that increasingly exist only in memories.

I think that’s true nationwide. To some extent, it occurs “naturally” (bad choice of words, I know. Organically?) but it increasingly appears to fit an agenda- the whole communist claptrap writ large. Not the moral decline necessarily but the poverty/ “inequality” thing.

We shouldn’t *let* these memories go down the memory hole. For all it’s “deficiencies” & it’s “backwardness”, it was a better world- saner, safer, by far less stressful & more satisfying. There were improvements to be made, but tragically, those attempts at “improvement” destroyed the good things we had.
And that suits the communists’ agenda; those who hate the whole concept of America, just fine.
