Total chaos: 1-3 inches of snow cripples metro Atlanta

The blizzard of '93 brought more snow than most Atlanta natives had ever seen or will see.

The floods of 2009 brought an unexpected rush of water that submerged interstates.

The winter storm of 2011 took an entire week away from the city.

But the Snow Jam of 2014 might be the single craziest weather day in Atlanta in a generation.

1-to-3 inches of snow, mixed in with an afternoon drive that still hasn't ended has brought Atlanta to its knees again.

“There are certain things we don’t have control over and one of those is the weather. This came rather unexpectedly," Governor Nathan Deal said. "The time frame in which it hit was a very short time frame. And I think we’re better prepared now than we were in 2011.”

Metro Atlanta interstates have been gridlocked since about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Commutes stretched 8-to-10 hours. And that's for those who actually got home.

Thousands have been stranded in their cars just sitting in the middle of the road.

DH read all the Master and Commander books. He LOVED them and was so sad to finish the last one. Enjoy!

On a happier note, Mayor-about-town Muhammad Kasim Reed just returned from a chic jaunt to Davos, Switzerland, which is likely why he was so unprepared for this blizzard.

And we're so happy he's "come out" for gay marriage.

"I had to draw my own picture of a potato. I drew on the largest untattered piece of my threadbare tshirt. My only shirt."

*snicker*

------------------------------------------------->

You had a shirt?!

We only had HALF a tshirt and had to play "paper, rock, scissors" to see who was going to get to wear that 1/2 shirt on any given day!

P.S. What is a potato?

“..library paste on crackers...”

We had those for mid-morning snacks on Mon-Wed-Fri at school! LOL.

Library paste AND a cracker?

P.S. What is a cracker?

"Yes I had a school to go to and I had a bicycle and a pencil! We were rich!"

Very rich, indeed!

*snicker*

In our school district, we used charred branches to write.

We used to cut up the cardboard backings on yellow tablets and pretend they were ‘crackers’. We closed our eyes, and it worked if the paste was fresh!

This is like the DC episode in spring of 2011. At 6AM...they knew there were going to be major problems by mid-afternoon. They waited until noon....noting people could start leaving around 1PM. By 2PM, everyone was supposed to be on the road. Well...the ice storm was starting at that point, and most everything was stalled by 2:30.

I can understand issues like this happening in 1966. But weather analysis has become a great tool. There’s no reason why local authorities can’t issue some warning eight hours prior to the “hit”, and emphasize everyone to stay home or to head home.

DOT sign over the interstate this morning:

TRAVEL INTO ATLANTA NOT RECOMMENDED
EXTREME DELAYS AHEAD

There were more cars than I expected and too many of them were over confident. Police were directing traffic around three of them that spun out this morning at the south end of the connector.

I typed “Atlanta” into Google, and this is what appeared at top of page:

Civil Emergency Message
Georgia
3 hours ago – National Weather Service

will remain in effect until noon today and primarily pertains to the Atlanta metro counties of Gema Area 7 ... will be extremely treacherous through Thursday morning or until ...

Thanks for the heads up.

I drove 20+ miles yesterday rescuing friends who had spent the first night in an office building and in an event facility. But then I’ve got a clue about driving in this stuff, there was very little traffic, and I’ve got a good vehicle for the conditions. The ice was quite dangerous at times, and some of the people out there more so.

Hint to the guy sliding along in the late-model Mustang with the big performance tires: YOU HAVE THE WORST VEHICLE IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE FOR WINTER DRIVING! STAY OFF THE ROADS IN THESE CONDITIONS! Oh, and learn to use your turn signals.

As always in Atlanta driving, the situation was made worse by so many people being idiots on the road. One of several I observed is in the example above, and I effectively wasn’t out in it at all Tuesday afternoon.

I was behind a new Charger for a good part of the Tuesday night commute. He spent most of the time in various states of sideways.

We do that up North here now. WE knew this cold event this week was coming. Schools already were announcing closings the night before and temps did not plunge until the afternoon.

As much as folks in Atlanta want to rail against the city government etc., I can’t believe all those people would be so ...pick your own word to insert...as to go to work, go to school, etc.

All this talk that it surprised them is hogwash too. As Greta pointed out on her show...the weather folks were telling them this was going to happen. Nobody listened and to a huge extent I find it hard to believe.

You are correct. It is still not safe to be out. The National Guard has been called in, they are doing the best job and Chick-fi-a giving food away. Now we are watching the mayor of Atlanta and the governor play the blame game.

Besides the high end sports cars, I suspect there a lot of people that don't realize they are driving around on summer performance tires.

Yes, exactly.

Here’s a post I made in the GA forum yesterday:

Another minor rant - there are a lot of people driving higher-end cars that have performance / Summer tires. Many people don’t know the difference between Summer tires, all-season tires, and snow tires. Snow tires are hard to justify here in ATL, but if you have Summer tires, DO NOT DRIVE when the temperatures are low and there is any precipitation on the road. Summer tires have all the grip of a hockey puck on an ice rink in those conditions.

If you must have performance tires, you need a 2nd set of wheels/tires for Winter. My Summers are stacked in my garage, my Winter wheels are on my car with all-season tires.
