You know you've arrived not only when you get invited to the State of the Union address, but when you're asked to sit next to the first lady herself. That's where General Motors' new CEO, Mary Barra, will be sitting tonight.
Barra, the first woman to lead a major auto manufacturer, was one of the guests singled out to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama for "represent(ing) the stories of millions of Americans across the country, who are working hard to better their communities, improve their own economic outcomes and help restore opportunity for all" according to the White House.
Since every decision a president makes is politicized in some way, I'm sure this will be fodder for critics of Obama, his role in GM's bailout and what is perceived as a buddy-buddy relationship between the company and his administration. To be fair, the government has sold all its shares in GM, although it came at a loss of about $10 billion to taxpayers, and people are still rightfully feeling stung about that.
Barra, according to the Wall Street Journal, will be seated next to the first lady with several other distinguished guests, including 23-year-old student Cristian Avila, who was brought to the U.S. illegally when he was nine years old, and Antoinette Tuff, a bookkeeper credited with preventing a school shooting in Atlanta last year. Two survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing will also be seated with the first lady
Good thing she has a big seat...
They couldn’t get Raul Castro - and Chavez is dead, right?
What? Buy a GM product? Own GM stock? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This should go a long way toward convincing the car-buying public that GM really isn’t ‘government motors’.
They made her an offer she couldn’t refuse?
Who knows.
Is she gonna sit in her lap, right next to the pole smoker?
Chrony Capitalism like Krup and Siemens in the 1940s
Yup. Government Motors. I won’t buy one till they are completely free of union scum and govt ownership.
At least the union sold their share in Chrysler to fiat.
i guess dennis roddman wasn’t available?
Screw GM
Two of Obama’s bitches?
They got a gay NBA player, it just wasn’t Dennis.
Bought and Paid For. Maybe Miss Michelle and her new Bess-Friend can take selfies together. Wont Barack be jealous having to share the limelight.
$10 billion???? If that’s what they admit to it’s probably closer to $25 billion.
The GM CEO is being brought in to remind her and the rest of GM that fedzilla owns them.
The $10B is a trivial loss compared with the $6000B in debt that Obama has piled on our children; that's not the source of the sting. It's the massive corruption of the GM "bankruptcy" in which contract law, bankruptcy law, and common law were ignored in order to give those with political connections a sweet deal at the expense of those without connections.
I see no reason not to invite GM's CEO. The Obamas don't like those in private companies, so this gives them an appearance of having a diverse businessperson without the bother of associating with someone who believes in capitalism or economic freedom.
“a loss of about $10 billion to taxpayers, and people are still rightfully feeling stung about that.”
Seems everyone is forgetting the most egregious act of closing the dealerships. It displayed the Obama administration’s enforcement methods as told by EPA Administrator Armendariz. There’s a pattern here, FRiends.
Yes and their are so many of those business men and women we could mention but won't, the smart ones steer clear of lear deader. But this relationship is no different than what Stalin had with of MIG or Tupolev. Perhaps the CEO of GM should sit on the lap of the CEO of GE you know as sort of a Mini-Me...
not me! i wish I had bought an 85 Iroc Z when they came out!
Cristian Avila, a 23-year-old Dreamer, or undocumented immigrant
The White House says Avila, an immigrant-rights activist
received a two-year stay from deportation through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program created by the president in June 2012 which made an estimated 1.9 million young undocumented immigrants eligible for work authorization and deportation relief.
Avila, of Phoenix, Arizona, began volunteering with Mi Familia Vota, a Latino civic engagement group
and participated in the Fast for Families, a fast undertaken on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. late in 2013
“We are Americans; this is our home.
Avila added that the passage of Arizonas S.B. 1070, which mandated that immigrants carry their proof of legal status with them at all times and greatly expanded police departments authority to detain those suspected of being in the country illegally had impressed him with the importance of the Latino vote.
Mi Familia Vota is a national organization working to unite the Latino community and its allies to ensure social and economic justice through increased civic participation
