Extreme cold temperatures in New York City are taking their toll on transportation. Earlier this week, snow cancelled flights and slowed down the subway network. Now some ferry service is being suspended because the East River is freezing over.

Hudson River view from about 98th street Manhattan, January 8, 2014
I can remember watch foot thick and more floes at the 72nd st Boat Basin in the early seventies. There was a clear center channel with thick floes packing up at the shore line. Noise was awesome at times. Grinding and cracking.

I always think of it as a train station on the Hudson line, but I see that Wikipedia claims it is a neighborhood in the Bronx.

The East River really isnt a river, its a tidal basin, connecting Long Island Sound with New York Harbor and is almost as salty as the Atlantic. It receives a small amount of fresh water from the Harlem River, and possibly from rivers draining into Long Island sound.Yes, the East "River" being salt water makes it freezing over even more impressive.
No mention in this article about the Hudson River, it freezing over, and the ferry services across it.

Yeah, I remember in the seventies watching the enormous chucks of ice floating under the GWB. Haven’t seen it like that in a long time.

My grandmother claimed to have walked across the East River one winter. Not sure of the year. Maybe 1888? She would have been about 10 years old.

It can’t happen, Al Gore said we are HEATING the planet. The East River can’t freeze, we don’t want Al Gore look like a liar, do we? :)

NJ is across the Hudson. East River separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens.

Actually, you confuse me with somebody that really gives a crap about the geographical context up there. IIRC, they stole all that from the Indians, and now the immigrants, posers, users and losers are stealing it from them.

So true.
If the Hudson freezes over it’ll be ‘interesting’. East River is smaller.
Now we know how Washington retreated over NY Harbor to Brooklyn with heavy cannon at the beginning of the Rev War.
