This will be the final end of the story for the ship of fools. I remarked when it was happening, if I had the money, I would buy the movie rights to this story, because they will need the money. If I were Fox, I'd broadcast it as a Christmas special every year.

Sierra Club will cut them a check. That’s ‘walking around’ money for econutter ‘non-profit’, tax exempt groups.

They should have just air dropped a copy of “Endurance” about Shackleton’s expedition with “Instruction Manual” written on the cover in magic marker.

>>>Could this be another stab at Russia??<<<

I don’t think so. First of all this ship was private operated and second it was finally fought through ice and went to port on it’s own.
They are warmists who went panic and departed early by Australian government cwho has to pay.

Didn’t Australia rescue a 16 year old girl who was sailing around the world alone? Now we want to be reimbursed for our rescue?

Well it’s a bit different. People in a commercial jet heading to Australia were asked to look for her boat as the plane descended in order to be able to see better. She was located and a boat came out to pick her up; in the case of that ice bound ship. More resources, etc.

How is suing the ship’s insurer going to impact anyone who was a passenger?

It will get really, really hard to pull these stunts in the future when they can’t get insurance.

All the more reason to require “Darwin” insurance for those whose sense of adventure greatly outstrips their intellect.

She was actually picked up by the French, although Australia was heavily involved in the rescue effort (the girl got herself in trouble on the border of Australian and French maritime rescue zones - Australia had better aerial resources to precisely locate her, but a French vessel was close enough to pick her up. But the situation is different.

Her life was in danger, making her a 'distressed mariner' and therefore the response to rescue her fell under the general 'law of the sea' - that mariners and maritime nations respond to rescue each other because you'd expect the others to do it for you.

In the case of the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, they weren't actually in any real immediate danger. They could have stayed icebound for quite a while quite safely, waiting for the opportunity to leave. That changes things - there's a difference between mobilising resources to save people who are in actual danger, and doing it simply because they are in an uncomfortable situation.
