What Jobs Will the Robots Take?
The Atlantic ^ | Jan 23 2014 | Derek Thompson

Posted on 01/24/2014 2:28:11 PM PST by Second Amendment First

It is an invisible force that goes by many names. Computerization. Automation. Artificial intelligence. Technology. Innovation. And, everyone's favorite, ROBOTS.

Whatever name you prefer, some form of it has been stoking progress and killing jobs—from seamstresses to paralegals—for centuries. But this time is different: Nearly half of American jobs today could be automated in "a decade or two," according to a new paper by Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne, discussed recently in The Economist. The question is: Which half?

Another way of posing the same question is: Where do machines work better than people? Tractors are more powerful than farmers. Robotic arms are stronger and more tireless than assembly-line workers. But in the past 30 years, software and robots have thrived at replacing a particular kind of occupation: the average-wage, middle-skill, routine-heavy worker, especially in manufacturing and office admin.

Indeed, Frey and Osborne project that the next wave of computer progress will continue to shred human work where it already has: manufacturing, administrative support, retail, and transportation. Most remaining factory jobs are "likely to diminish over the next decades," they write. Cashiers, counter clerks, and telemarketers are similarly endangered. On the far right side of this graph, you can see the industry breakdown of the 47 percent of jobs they consider at "high risk."

Never happen for so many reasons it’s hard to know where to start. You are dead wrong on all counts and your software experience confers zero authority on you in this matter.

NONE of the jobs you say can already be done by machines could possibly be done in the cramped confines of a NY/NJ cemetery. Forget moving the stones mechanically because there are OTHER stones flush against their backs. Chip a stone and you’ve bought it.

Forget driving on the graves FORGET IT! Not gonna happen. It is unsafe in terms of grave collapse (I have sunk to my hips in a recently backfilled grave)> AND IT WILL REALLY PISS OFF ALL THE PEOPLE WHOSE GRAVES AND ORNAMENTS YOU CRUSH. Some stones are 500 feet from any road. This monster machine would be off roading on unstable ground.

I don’t care what bike shops have it will not transfer to a cemetery and stone. “Lifting” of the template is a constant problem due to the roughness and contamination of the surfaces. Remediation of this constant problem requires a control so fine and specific NO machine could do it in the field or even in a factory for that matter. But really, putting ALL of the hardware into one unit to do the job would result in a monstrosity that no cemetery would ever let on the property even if it could magically do the job properly.

Sorry but they can. Most of the things I’m pointing out are being already done by machines the machines are shopping cart sized, heavier to be sure, but not that big.

No don’t forget driving on the graves. In relatively short order the whole machine will way less than a thousand pounds, since you can move these 1200 pound stones around clearly that weight won’t be too high. And you won’t be crushing ornaments, we make cars that can park themselves now, avoiding ornaments is another already solved problem. It’s not going to be a monster machine.

Templates won’t actually be necessary, with the stone being carved by a machine the template will be digitized (which is how custom wheels are made in many bike shops now, just draw it in the software, and go have lunch).

Sorry bub, the technology already exists it just hasn’t been put together yet in a way cheap enough and portable enough. Just gotta get this machine:

mobile and you are replaced. It won’t be a monstrosity. It really is just that easy. sorry this seems to have damaged your ego. The good news is you’ve got at least 5 years probably closer to 10 to learn how to run that machine. Good luck.

I predict within 10 years, Sex Robots will be indistinguishable from real women looks and function wise (minus getting knocked up).

Best thing - real men will prefer them to “Westernized” women who will continue to be fat, ugly, and bitchy (typical “Girls” episode) thanks to feminism; the betas and white knights can have fun with them.

Congrats feminists, you “won”!

And when they have the built-in “PMS Version 2.0” software, you simply pick up the Universal Remote Control, press the “OFF” button, and voila! Blessed silence...

Or...

Press the “Fast Forward” button, and she goes through the whole PMS thing in warp speed, and it’s over in 15 seconds...

Eventually the robots will be posting for us here on Free Republic. All we will have to do is sit back and see what our robots are saying for us.

If I disagree with what my robot is posting, will I be able to retract my post? I'm thinking the answer is no.

“omitted...”

nah! Ya GOTTA leave it in! Think of how much fun and enjoyment men will get EVERY TIME they start winding up... and ya just press the button and they cut-off mid-sentence with a quick “Urp!”...

Then ya can rewind it and do it over and over and over again, just for the sheer fun of it!!!

Invite the friends to the bring THEIRS over too, and see who has the quickest “trigger finger” over a couple of cold beers...

The possibilities are limitless..

Well, since, you have about a 95% of ending up with a vinegar & water combo*, no soul is better than that crap.

*Assuming one is shopping in the “Westernized” aisle.

Also, if you get the MGMHD movie channel, “Tom Jones”, with Albert Finney is on tonight at 7:30 PM Eastern.

Eh, soul shmoal. You could argue only a minority of humans possess one anyway.

Affordable robot wives would be a game changer and maybe the end of the human race, in the western world at least. I’m thinking it will be much longer than 10 years though.

Any of you guys see the movie “Cherry 2000”? The plot is this dude has robot wife that he breaks by getting it wet (so how did he um clean it? ;d). So he hires a red-haired Melanie Griffith to help him steal another one (of the same out of production model) from this warehouse in a lawless desert area and some stupid militia tries to stop them for no good reason. Very odd movie. In the end he chooses Melanie over the souless but attractive and perky robot. Normally I don’t go for Melanie Griffith but I liked her with the red hair.

There are some qualities that machine intelligence simply doesn’t have: creativity, originality, articulation, analytical capacity, wit, humor. If you don’t need any of those things, you’re set. That is why I, Unit 315B, have been doing BilltheDrill’s postings for the last decade.

“So he hires a red-haired Melanie Griffith...”

Ah yes, good ole ‘80s schlock. Melanie Griffith was good before, yes, I’ll say it again, horrible plastic surgeries and an avalanche of butts took their toll.

RE: Robots. The feminazis would be against them 1,000% because that would mean the end of them for all functions.

You argue in absolute ignorance with a aplomb that is entertaining. When you start throwing around snotty familiarities and than name calling it becomes sublime.

If I want to learn how to work a machine that ETCHES images on to polished granite I’ll take a break from INSCRIBING stone and stop in at one of the many stone dealers I serve and get him to show me; that is if I’m looking to take a big pay cut. I can blast one half inch into solid granite in seconds. That joke of a unit you googled up could just about fog a mirror if you gave it all day. 115 Volts!? My dealers wouldn’t waste good piss urinating on that thing. By the way those dealers who give me so much work have stoneblast booths that can cut stone faster than I can and yet they give me the work and pay me anyway. Wow.

They pay you because you’re mobile. Their booth soon will be, and you’ll be replaced. Those are the facts, and all your whining and chest thumping won’t change the force of technology.

Those are the facts,

LOL!

A fact is a thing that is unassailably true. You are making an argument that you are literally not competent to make. You have no facts at your disposal but you apparently have perfect faith in your ability to make suppositions based upon ignorance. Like I said, SUBLIME. I love the age of the internet.

I have lots of facts at my disposal and I’ve presented them and you aren’t even attempting to refute any of them. Your need to turn the argument personal shows you know the facts don’t back you, so now we both know you’re wrong. So the conversation is done, been done for a while you just can’t admit it.

Bye now.
