my dad called this phenomenon "winter".
I vaguely remember when it was called that too.
Here in SoCal with our sunshine and 70-80 degree daily temps, winter has been missing in action since December.

Polar Vortex? Is that the new global warming fake scientific term to make people feel smart when they not only believe it, but use it?
BTW, I live in CT. I had to bury my dog yesterday. I was worried it would be difficult, because typically the ground is frozen solid. It was as easy as digging during the summer. I was able to get a 4.5 deep hole within 45 minutes. I could have dug holes for fence posts for an entire fence around my yard.

Polar Vortex?? Never heard of it before this year?I didn't either, but the only polar vortex, is that wind coming out of Al Gore's filthy, disgusting pie hole.

Interesting! More important, any forecast for the Super Bowl in NY, Feb 2?
To: zeestephen
And the Farmers Almanac forecasted that the Super Bowl, incredibly being played in an outdoor stadium in NJ in February, will be frozen, so perhaps these polar fronts are a part of the coming global cooling.
To: Vince Ferrer
They used to call these strong cold fronts coming down from Canada “Alberta Clippers”.
To: zeestephen
Just checked the 10 day forecast which shows normal weather.

Thanks for the excellent graphic!
I wonder if there is enough room on the Weather.com homepage to post this?
Perhaps if they deleted 10 or 15 of their headlines screaming “Kill Dish Network!” and “Call Congress NOW!” they might be able to fit it in.

Vortex?
Is that the new media buzzword of the month?
I know what a vortex is (hurricanes, cyclones, tornados, flushing the toilet, etc.). I just don’t know how it applies to cold weather.

That thing that used to be expressed: “The jet stream is dipping far to the south over the central states.”
That’s the ticket

Aka....... a trough
The trough, like a large blue tongue, licks the Central USA and then follows the frontal movement to the east
