A police officer shot dead his wife, two children and mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself, authorities said today.
The bodies of Joshua Boren, 34, Kelly Boren, 32, Joshua Boren, 7, five-year-old Haley Boren and Marie King, 55, were discovered in a gruesome scene at their home in Spanish Fork, Utah on Thursday.
Police said the five were found dead about 11pm when co-workers became concerned that Boren didn't show up for his night shift as a patrol officer at the Lindon Police Department.

Your right. Here at FreeRepublic, for many years this site was virulently pro Law Enforcement. As you say the first step is to realize that a problem exists. Some of us spent many years swimming up river on this issue. We were asked things like “so what were you in for?”, “when did you get out?”, called mentally ill and compared to Charles Manson and of course accused of being druggies.
So the first task here was to illustrate that a problem existed. We have done that, or more correctly, events and experience has changed many peoples perspectives.
I think it is also true to say that as “our” political points of view have lost national power, and the guns of the Establishment have turned against “us” the realities of Law Enforcement abuse have become only to real. Though it is too bad that it took the conservative viewpoint to fall out of favor for conservatives to see the light.

One of the biggest obstacles to fighting crime in predominantly black neighborhoods is not wanting to cooperate with “the man”. (This also applies to other ways of “acting white” but that’s another discussion).
This is nothing new (think of the mob and rackets trials of the 1930s -60s).
That this mutual antagonism seems to be getting worse is not a good harbinger.
No mystery as to why black neighborhoods won’t call the Police.
Combination of outstanding warrants and seeing Police beating the crap out of black people every chance they get.
That was such a gorgeous family. Black deeds, madness, inexplicable result of our world chained in sins and groaning in despair.
“One of the biggest obstacles to fighting crime in predominantly black neighborhoods is not wanting to cooperate with the man.....

The real issue isn’t that FR all of a sudden turned anti-cop but that the internet opened the eyes of so many to what actually happens rather than the whitewashed version you get on the MSM. Kelly Thomas was a good example of that and people are rightly revolted at seeing cops literally get away with murder on a day in, day out basis. But it’s more than that, more and more people are having interactions with cops that are negative (tickets, not even bothering to come out to take a report when people are robbed or car stolen, etc.) so people are starting to realize that cops are not (and really never were) out to “protect and to serve” other than themselves and the politicians that control them. There is a loss of trust that is similar to what you see in the third world, maybe not as bad but it’s getting there. What you see on FR is a reflection of what you see out in the rest of the US and unless the cops clean up their act and drive out the bad eggs rather than standing with them you’ll continue to see the public’s view of cops degrade.
All that said, no matter how bad they are you still need cops to keep the barbarians in check. It’s just that you need to also ensure that someone is watching the watcher and right now no one really is.
Many of us know the deal from growing up in our own neighborhoods and seeing some good & bad eggs with whom we came in contact, and then later on with those we grew up with who became cops themselves.
But I agree, with advances in technologies and materiel, the potential for abuse has ramped. And I’d venture to say the further one gets from the local the more troublesome. And saints preserve us if the national “ceiling” ever breaks and we become subject to the global.
Man you must have a lot of interesting videos by now.
I want to know if this killer cop was on steroids during his murderous rampage. Seems that violence and murder are often end results of steroid junkies, and MANY cops today are steroid driven wackos.
These stories just shatter my heart, I physically feel them. I just weep for the poor kids.
If these idiots want to off themselves, go do it, leave everyone else alone. I’m greatly saddened.
Cops work things out with people less and less, and are under policy pressures to dominate, terrorize and destroy more and more. If you haven't noticed, the behavior of the police, generally, has been changing in this direction for quite awhile now.
Well, this cop was apparently about to "lose" his argument with his wife, and thereby lose a lot of what he had - access to his children, money, etc. So, under stress, his training kicked in (the new type of training, I mean), and he decided he had to dominate the situation, and terrorize and destroy the problem.
And so he did.
By the time cops realize what they're doing at work does to themselves, it's often too late to avoid tragedy. But those who create these ever-worse police policies don't care - they see cops as infinitely replaceable, and not human beings. Just like they teach cops to think of us. Literally, what goes around, comes around.
Some Leftard Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist wrote an article capitalizing on the Florida theater popcorn shooting:
Gun-rights fanatics (these days there are few who are not fanatics) insist that only a few poorly trained, mentally unstable or criminally inclined gun owners give all the millions of God-fearing, Constitution-defending firearms enthusiasts a bad name. But can anyone think of a person more well-trained and responsible than a retired police captain, SWAT team leader and security guard?
The Leftard failed (deliberately) to mention several salient facts:
1) Police are NOT required to take the CCW courses that "civilians" take, which teach them to RETREAT and AVOID a situation where they'll have to use their gun.
2) Police are now taught to CONFRONT and ESCALATE, especially SWAT team types.
3) There are no small number of American police officers using steroids, which increase aggressiveness.
So to answer the Leftard's rhetorical question: Yes, I CAN think of a number of persons more well-trained and responsible than a retired police captain, SWAT team leader and security guard, namely, most of America's ordinary CCW holders.
I think it's disgusting that the Left gets to use the actions of a confrontational pseudomilitary force that THEY silently assented to and helped create to attack law-abiding gun owners.
100% agree. I like your choice of words, as well. The Left didn't do this alone. They had and continue to have willing accomplices.
I love your well thought out posts, DariusBane.
But I see Responsibility missed it... So I’ll ping him to it again, in case he’d like to respond to your excellent points.
