DALLAS COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -
A tense ordeal inside a Dollar General store in Orrville ended with a gunman dead at the hands of a customer who took action. The fatal shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Highway 22.
Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman Jr. says the gunman walked into the store waving a gun in the air and forced a cashier and customer at gunpoint towards a break room area. At that point, the customer pulled out a concealed weapon and shot the suspect in the chest once. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. The entire incident played out in less than five minutes, police said.
According to the sheriff, other customers and delivery men were inside the store at the time of the incident. Several customers making their way into the store saw the man waving a gun and ran away.
The Dollar General store was closed Thursday afternoon following the shooting. A sign on the front door indicated it would reopen Friday. WSFA was asked to leave the property by Dollar General management.
There was another sign on the doors of the business stating that open carry of a weapon was not allowed inside the store. According to the sheriff, the customer's gun was concealed and inside a holster. His investigators are confirming whether or not the customer has a valid concealed carry permit.

Would they feel better if the gunman had shot everyone in the store?”
If he didn’t they will not do much. The prosecutor knows that he could never get a conviction.
If this was New York and were the shooter I would have left before the police arrived
“Dont go anywhere at gunpoint.”
Most important of all: DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS! ;)
“Wasnt in Texas.
Dallas Co, Alabama”
Well, don’t mess with Alabama, either!!!;)
Very dangerous facing someone armed.
Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.
Center mass first, because it tends to freeze the target long enough to make an aimed shot to the head. It works even with a .22lr, so carry and practice, whatever you choose to carry. (The Ruger SR22 is a very nice .22lr for carry; magazine followers changed out can give 14 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber for double action first round.)
same guy who said ‘good fences make good neighbors’.
Lazarus Long was a popular character in many Heinlein novels.
I know what you mean, I’ve read many of his novels including the Lazarus Long series.
He was a white guy from a respected Dallas County family. I’ve heard he had mental health issues. It’s been quite a shock to people in Selma and Dallas Co.
I love a story with a happy ending.
