NEW YORK J.C. Penney Co. said on Wednesday it would close 33 stores and cut 2,000 jobs as part of its efforts to return to profitability.
Chief Executive Myron Ullman said in a statement the action "addresses a strategic priority to improve the profitability of our stores."
Penney is the second major U.S. retailer in as many weeks to announce layoffs. Last week, Macy's Inc said it was eliminating 2,500 jobs. Those cuts will be offset over time as the retailer plans to add positions to its online business, leaving overall staffing levels unchanged at around 175,000.

Two thousand more people out of a job.
The “Ellen” layoffs.
For those who haven’t figured out the current economic trend....we are in a depression. Folks don’t spend money on nice clothing or style or fashion....while in a depression. They cut back.
It’s been a long time since JC Penney has sold “nice clothing or style or fashion.” Their quality has gone down the tubes, and they’ve been a dying store, barely holding on, for at least a decade now. Their problems go far beyond the “Ellen” thing, or even the 0bamaconomy.
How is that going for the Zer0 Economy? Target Corp.’s fiscal third-quarter earnings fell 46%. Macy’s plans to cut 2500 jobs and close 5 stores. Struggling Sears in the United States dropped 9.2 percent during the holiday shopping season compared with the same period the previous year. According to retail industry tracker ShopperTrak, U.S. retailers posted their lowest holiday sales growth in four years after shoppers stayed at home despite some of the biggest discounts and promotions since the recession.
Wait until the full effects of Obamacare hit the economy.
What? You mean all those zillions of gay adorers did not run out to Pennys at Ellen beck and call? I am shocked. They even had an edgy gay CEO to improve the joint with sex kitten back to school outfits!!!!!!
Homosexual ad failure.
Homosexual ad failure.
I shopped at Penny for decades. There is one near my house. But I’ll never enter the building again. I wrote and told them so. Cowards lacked the balls to respond.
Ellen only has her show for one reason....to promote her own personal agenda.
I’ve never understood the attraction. She can’t sing, she can’t dance and she’s not funny. Factor in her perverse lifestyle and she’s downright repulsive. Amazingly, and sadly, she appeals to many Americans.
I highly doubt that Ellen was looking for the gig.
No, Ellen didn't need to look for a job with Penneys. Much more likely is that Penney's approached Ellen, having decided they needed to shore up the demographic segments she exemplifies.

Ego? Sure. Gay? Sure. But definitely $$$. She may be queer and a libtard, but, when it comes to herself, she is a capitalist! Rich 'tards always are.
These programs are like white noise. Think about watching an "idiot" show...and you'll find you have little to no recall of the show. Ellen is an idiot show.
But their heart was one of 'ellen' and 'obama'. Doing things the wrong way is not the way to success. It drags one down as it is our country. Evil knows no bounds - the answer to 'how low can you go'.
That is a popular misconception.
The reason JCP fell on hard times is it allowed a CEO to trash the hard earned lessons of retailing. He played fruit basket turnover and the basket never righted its self.
The damage was not from the political ellen decision but from plain old bad business.
“Their problems go far beyond the Ellen thing, or even the 0bamaconomy.”
I agree with that. My SO goes there out more of habit than anything, but I haven’t been there in years. They are a retailer from another century, for another century. Sad, but true.

Well put; the days of these types of stores are ending. Besides the inability to compete with Wal-Mart and Amazon (as Americans continue tightening their belts), in our increasingly segregated society exposing oneself to the unassimilated underclass encountered in public places like this makes no sense.
This is “music to my ears.”
Nothing could be better than to watch a “queer friendly” business slowly sinking under.
They closed the store in my home town last year and no one misses it.
