"Had Mitt and I Won, This Would Not Be Necessary"
Slate ^ | 15 Jan 14 | David Weigel

The feedback continues, with a bunch of military veterans and family members asking me how I could defend the callous COLA cuts to military pensions by way of explaining why Congress is trying to undo them. Another reader email:

I strenuously object to being asked to sacrifice any more! I risked my life in two deployments to war zones, sacrificed my health (I'm also a disabled veteran), and jeopardized my relationship with my family for my country. I find Congress' latest demand a kick in the gut. We veterans and retirees have sacrificed enough without having to endure the pain of COLA cuts. Congress must first reduce the COLA for all current federal retirees (including members of Congress) and Social Security recipients and demand additional sacrifices from non-military Americans. Or better yet, I'm sure there are $6 billion that could be saved by closing corporate tax loopholes, cutting farm subsidies to wealthy corporations, etc. There are at least $6 billion in waste in the defense budget alone. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will cost at least $400 billion, and it doesn't even work! But military veterans and retirees should be the last group Congress asks for more sacrifice.

If I've heard this much, I can only imagine what Republicans have been getting in their voicemails and inboxes. On The Hugh Hewitt Show yesterday, Paul Ryan was handed the hideous job of defending the cuts against a host who found them morally outrageous.

"Had Mitt and I won that election, this would not be required," said Ryan. "This would not be necessary."

Hewitt wouldn't have it. "This will destroy retention," he said. "It will destroy morale, and it is deeply unfair to the American military which has sacrificed more than anyone else."

Oh I understand that. But some of these people literally believe that if you do not vote for their choice, then you literally add a vote to another candidate’s column.

And I mean literally.

RE “Rubio? Really? I don’t see that. I see a complete schmoozer, and intellectually challenged dufus with the moral character of a snake.”

But he is the only one Republican who can win Hispanics vote, he and Christie can. The fat ones will go for Christie,

Rubio/Christie 2016 !

with Karl Rove as the architect.

No. There is another. Rick Perry. Any man that would build them a superhighway into The American core and emphasize a failed ‘smart fence’ over a ‘dumb’ real one is a man illegals can believe in.

“There’s only so much people of character can take. Moderation and lukewarmness. Hey, Jesus said He could deal with criminals, that it was the lukewarm that He felt like vomiting out. Rev 3:16”

Well, instead you have managed to vomit out Obama on the rest of us. In order to avoid the lukewarm, you have facilitated the criminal. Thanks so much.

In another post I commented on people throwing themselves on the floor kicking and screaming in the manner of a 2 year old not getting their way.

Man oh man do you fit that analogy.

Nothing gets through your wall of pride. A year ago, there were a bunch like you. All convinced they were keepers of the way truth and light. And as the months passed and the GOP went further left, there were fewer and fewer. Most admitted it or just simply shut up and decided that they were wrong.

The greatest pleasure I have on FR is seeing what a rarity your kind has become. Sure, a few will mouth off as the election nears and disrupt any progress. you’ll help keep the status quo going as best you can.

But you are losing badly. You know it and I know you know it.

So enjoy your performance and the attention you get. And when you ultimately lose, YOU have to look in a mirror and see how pathetic you are.

Civilians never follow vets.

They do not understand them, nor the military, nor the role of the military.

In our government, the pols work for the people, and the military works under the direction of the pols/the congress, who holds a check on the CIC/the pres.

that’s the order, and the military doesn’t waver from that.

The military has no union representation, just a random wife or vet who is so busy he’s not really a great articulator, though his heart is in the right place.

But the military cannot fight for rights. They don’t need to, they’re all well articulated and documented, like their retirement pay.

They are the workers, the civilians are the boss of the congress.

It is, and don’t doubt this, it is the civilians who are doing this by allowing the congress to do it. The fact is that the congress works for the civilians, no matter how corrupted that contract, or the constitution, has been allowed by the civilians to become.

People know this, they are just poorly educated on it, but they just have an instinct for it.

The military absolutely depends on the American public to take care of them and to do so by electing just leaders.

The Constitution states that one of the few jobs of government is to provide protection of the constitution from enemies. Our military, among others, does that. But so do the American people, they’ve just forgotten it.

but the people neglect and abuse the military, and they are doing so now. They are not aware of it. They depend on the media for civic education and instruction, against all evidence that the media has no idea what the Constitution or the role of govt or the military are.

But the military will never, naturally, be looked on as political leaders.

The pundits and the public will allow the congress to steal promised under contract money from war vets and their widows without a loss of a minute of sleep.

And the military will be sad over it, not the loss of money but the loss of trust that will take a miracle to repair.

Had you and the Republican House majority simply held firm during the last CR debate, this wouldn't be 'necessary' either, Ryan.

The Hispanics, Oh yes.

They make up 7% of the vote.

Practicing religious are a bloc a whole lot larger than that, and they vote conservative.

Simple math doesn’t come into play for the GOP. Ulterior motives.

But they are racist and they do favor Hispanics over the military and veterans.

It is so immoral.

Romney and Obama are both statists. Nothing Obama has done would have been avoided by Romney.

Romney is for gun control and would have allowed Fast & Furious just as Obama.

Romney is pro-homosexual and would have allowed military same-sex marriages just as Obama.

Romney is part of the cult of extreme greed and would have allowed Banksters to escape prison and to be bailed out by the Federal Reserve while extracting billions for himself just as Obama.

Romney would have allowed the IRS to harass Tea Party supporters just as Obama.

Romney would have allowed the power of the NSA to expand to monitor every private conversation and correspondence of every American just as Obama.

Romney would have implemented federally controlled healthcare on every American just as Obama.

As the despicable leftist George Soros said about Obama and Romney, “there’s not a dime worth of difference”. Both are fascists.

But there is a difference, Romney would have looked conservatives in their eyes and lied through his teeth saying “I am a conservative too”. Therefore, Romney was the greater evil because he would be inside the camp of conservatives stabbing them in the back whereas Obama would never be allowed in.

The United States will survive Obama but would not necessarily survive Romney.

It is essential to preserving the Republic that is the United States of America (it is not a democracy) that conservatives remove the fascist statists inside their political body.

The citizens are definitely NOT in charge of congress, at least the productive citizens with moral compasses.

The American citizen needs to replace politicians literally down to the local dog catcher level in order to root out all of the nest featherers, “progressives” and outright communists.

People comment this (COLA cuts) will hurt retention and morale. That’s the whole freaking point. Out with the old, in with the new. You have to rotate the military over to “correct thinkers” for the oligarchy.

My personal “nut job conspiracy theory” is that Obama is in there specifically because it was thought he could pull off the most control oriented BS before a big financial/societal reset occurs.

The bad guys get ONE SHOT at their techno-authoritarian utopia and they know they need to have the majority of the remaining constitutional individualists sewn up before any sort of social crap hits the fan. If they have 5-10 years of unfettered politics as they are currently going, they win.

Any Republican that even utters the word compromise should find themselves flipping burgers. We need roll backs. We need a crop of politicians who spend a whole 1 or 2 election cycles just going through law, code and statute and hacking out all the crap.

You are as guilty in destroying this country as Obama is, as you facilitated his getting elected. I am sure you are so proud of yourself. Pride goeth before a fall. Too bad you are trying to take the rest of us down with you. As to attempts to purge FR of any dissenting opinion, are you sure your name isn’t Joseph Goebbels?

Well, the Romney defenders do know better than the founders. You know, that pesky Hamilton who said that people like Mitt are better in the enemies camp then ours.

If only these paragons of wisdom had lived in his time. Why, who knows? Today we might yet be English!

HA! Yea that feet to fire thing. Here they are a year later making excuses for the idiot and they were gonna hold his feet to the fire. Hooo boy! Yea. That would have happened.

Bhoner caves...excuses. Cantor caves....excuses. Ryan, Rubio, McColnel and the rest cave....excuses.

But Lord almighty! They’d have held Mitt’s feet to the fire. To repeat...the stupid burns.

It was my fault Obama won because I diss Romney .

But it was ALSO my fault that Obama won because I support Romney.

Yeah I've noticed stuff like that too. Kinda annoying. :)

It’s all they got. Tantrums. Facts cant support their positions so they go full lib and haZ a tizzy.

And they will tie up our attention again and again as the GOP pushes another Lib on us. As always. It’s their job to support that and they do it willingly.
