U.S. senators criticize Golden Globes Awards e-cigarette skit with in open letter

The presence of e-cigarettes and "vaping" have led to multiple conversations on whether they're really safer than the real thing, and a group of U.S. senators are none too pleased with the use of one in a skit during Sunday's Golden Globes.

One of the gags during the broadcast involved co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler talking about Julia Louis-Dreyfus being nominated for her roles in both the film Enough Said and the TV show Veep. After mentioning her decision to sit in the film section of the room, the camera cut away to Louis-Dreyfus, who snobbishly puffed on an e-cigarette and refused Reese Witherspoon's invitation to take a selfie with her.

While the bit went over well with the audience, on Tuesday four senators released an open letter to the producers of the NBC broadcast criticizing the "glamorization" of smoking. The senators, all Democrats, include Dick Durbin (IL), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Sherrod Brown (OH), and Edward J. Markey (MA).

“In light of studies showing that exposure to on-screen smoking is a major contributor to smoking initiation among youth, we are troubled that these images glamorize smoking and serve as celebrity endorsements that could encourage young fans to begin smoking traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes,” the letter reads.

The letter also asked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC Universal to avoid intentionally showing e-cigarettes in future broadcasts.

re: a TV comedy show that generated millions of dollars for Jerry and his producers!

For those who don’t know, Julia Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t need the money. She’s twice richer than Jerry Seinfeld or the producers COMBINED.

See here:

http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/actors/julia-louis-dreyfus-net-worth/

NET WORTH: $3 BILLION

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you and no we did not make a mistake when we say that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a net worth of $3 billion.

How is it possible that Julia has nearly twice as much money as Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld combined? It’s not from acting, it’s not from endorsements, and it’s not from investing in real estate. Nope, a little known fact is that Julia is lucky to be the eldest daughter of billionaire Gerard Louis-Dreyfus, chairman of the Louis Dreyfus Energy Services.

Now, to be fair, Julia’s father is still alive (born in 1932) as is her mother and step mother. She also has four siblings. But word on the street is that Julia is the apple of her father’s eye because of all the success she has had without relying on the family name or connections. This success outside the family business earned Louis-Drefuys millions of dollars of her very own both from Seinfeld as well as The New Adventures of Old Christine and others. But the real money will come through inheritance. I wonder how Jerry and Larry, George, and Kramer feel about being the poor friends of Elaine!

I knew that she was well-off, but that’s incredibly wealthy.

I remember when a carton of cigarettes was a great Christmas or birthday gift. I also remember when they were 25 cents per pack, sonny.

“being used as a distraction”

But the Senators are catching pure heck. They’re gonna have to pick their distractions more carefully.

Fracking, vaping, global warming, etc...

Liberal hysteria over not junk-science, but NO SCIENCE.

Here are a group of senators who spend too much time minding everyone else’s business, and not enough time minding their own...

Hey. The Senate may have run up $15 trillion in debt with no end to deficits in sight but at least we know they have the e-cigarette problem under control.

just wait for e-pot smoking..

The vaporizer technology in e-cigarettes derived from devices designed for marijuana use. Big contraptions, those early vaporizers. They heat the weed until the active ingredients vaporize, before the weed itself actually combusts. Many of the devices sold in medical marijuans shops today are pre-loaded e-cigarettes (loaded with THC oil).

And yes, the nannies are already up in arms about it.

Ok so seeing someone smoking a fake cigarette on screen will encourage youth smoking, but seeing violence on screen doesn't cause these same youths to act in a violent way.
Can some wooden headed progressive explain this logic to me.

Illinois is proposing a tax of $2 per capsule, or cartridge, or disposable e-cig whatever they are.

They are also proposing a statewide ban on them indoors, just like cigarettes.

BUT, you can smoke indoors at any of the Hookah lounges, because that is part of some peoples culture.... but only if it is a Hookah.

“You’d think the anti-smoking zealots would embrace e-cigarettes,”

They will when they are taxed.

Why do you think I picked those two shows?

Those two packs a day almost certainly killed Jack Webb early. If you watch the Maltese Falcon, there is constant smoking, largely to annoy Jack Warner.

The nannies will eventually find a way to connect global warming with these vapor e-cigs.

Feds and states will eventually find a way to tax them, too. Luxury tax, enjoyment tax, comfort tax or some such tax.
