'I can't believe I've been shot': Last words of man killed by retired police captain (truncated)

A 43-year-old father was shot dead by a retired cop in a Florida cinema after a row about him texting his three-year-old daughter as they waited for the movie to start, witnesses said.

Chad Oulson was shot in front of his wife and horrified movie-goers during an argument with 71-year-old Curtis Reeves.

The victim's wife, Nicole, was injured in the shooting after holding her hands out to try to shield Mr Oulson during the confrontation at a movie theater near Tampa on Monday.

After Reeves fired at his chest the victim was heard saying: 'I can't believe I got shot', according to Fox News.

Reeves, who is facing life in prison if found guilty, has been charged with second-degree murder. During a hearing on Tuesday he appeared via video link, wearing a green suicide smock - a fire resistant outfit that can't be torn or turned into a noose.

The judge ruled he should be held without bond because of the severity of the charges, but the no bond ruling can't be confirmed until a live hearing with Reeves.

Checking my joke waiting guide on the “Schoolyard massacre” to “Chavez gets cancer” range, with the corresponding timescale of “never” to “right now”, I’d say “dead jerk you never met making national news” rates one day.

I approve.

“I guess this is the “suicide vest” as described...”

Poorly named. A suicide vest would make it easy to kill yourself. Ask an arab.

Two years ago I was in New York and while at the Broadway show PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, a teen next to me was texting someone else. It was very distracting even though the characters in the texts were Chinese.

I felt like strangling him as he continued to do it all through the play. Every time there was a lull in the play out would come the phone.

If I’m on that jury - and it could be so - he has seen his last free days.

You should NOT be on ANY jury if you have made you mind up based on the limited facts provided by the "media".

"Did he? Or did he, as the article suggested, go to his car and retrieve his weapon before returning to his seat."

Please provide a link. I do not find this anyplace except for unsubstantiated and unsupported supposition on another post in here. They are not even making that claim on DU. The published police reports do not mention him leaving the building. Was he parked in the lobby or the bathroom?

Texting a THREE YEAR OLD?

I’ve been around some real jerks in movie theaters.

One man was chewing gum so loud (SMACK,SMACK,SMACK) you could hear him all over the theater.
A teen was constantly spitting on the floor.
Two women were constantly talking behind me.
Two women constantly giggling in front of me during a drama.
Then there is the coughers (hack, hack hack!)
Crying babies..The local theater had a special room for crying babies so they were no problem.
The list is endless. Now I wait till the DVD comes out.
I wonder why people don’t realize they are being jerks.

That is absolutely unsupported supposition not supported by any facts. There is nothing in any of the stories that say or even suggest that the shooter left the building and the subsequent confrontation was about him turning in the rude man to the management. Unreported and unsupported speculation stated as fact does not lead to rational or truthful discussions.

The next time a cop stops you get three feet in front of him, jump at him, start screaming at him and then through a big container of popcorn in his face all at the same time and see just how many times he shoots you. My educated guess is that he will stop shooting when you hit the ground. That is what cops are trained to do, stop a threat and they only have to believe that it is a threat of great bodily harm or death to them. That decision will be made in a fifth of a heartbeat.

So all the eyewitnesses are lying, but we're going to rely on your Jean Dixon psychic vision as the more reliable account.

Take your medication before you shoot the TV, grandpa.

Back in the olden days I saw many a patron of the drive-in theater lose it because some jerk parked ahead of him insisted on pressing his brake peddle causing the brake lights to come on.

It is distracting, and if someone does it during the trailers you can almost bet they will be doing it during the movie.

I’m with ya. There are so many rude, truly unbelievable people out there...

I’ve even had a few Walter Mitty like fantasies about blowing them away. But the difference is, I know I’d go to jail, be talked about by FReepers, and imperil my soul before God. So I don’t.

After a brief argument the retired “protector and servant” of the people went out of the theatre supposedly to find management to bring them back in to tell the texter to stop.

But he came back in without management.

There is a strong possibility that the real reason that he went out was to get his gun.

If security cameras catch him doing that then this is no longer second degree murder but Murder 1 — premeditated murder.

"He is not a cop, he is a citizen."

That is correct as far as it goes but is misleading because it ignores a few very important facts. Fact, he is a retired cop which means he has been through many years of repetitive training on how to react to violence from all sources and in all situations. Fact, he was promoted within the police department which indicates his ability to make proper decisions at the proper time as dictated by that training. Do you really think he can unlearn those years of training? Where is that stop button located? Is he given an uninstall program at his retirement ceremony?

Without a doubt this turned out totally wrong for all involved but there are many things here that are not yet knows or discussed.

He wasn’t texting a 3 year old, he was testing the day care center. Why what is printed here says that he was texting a 3 year old, I don’t know. That isn’t what the article says.

Tell me specifically what the eye witnesses said that I got wrong. Pleas provide links. I am not at all interested in what anyone thinks. Eye witness links please. If you can, you will, but if you don't then we will all know how honest you are.

The other man threw something at the ex-cop, he felt that he was in danger and shot the man.

CCW holders are trained to retreat. Cops are trained to confront.

Guess what happened here...
