(CNN) -- Cats and dogs in Venezuela may soon get a taste of the South American country's brand of socialism.
President Nicolas Maduro announced plans Sunday to consider controlling pet food prices as part of efforts to help street animals.
Price controls have become a staple of Venezuela's economic policies, drawing praise from supporters of Maduro and his government who say they make items more affordable for the poor. Opponents have sharply criticized such policies, arguing that they fuel goods shortages and harm businesses.

Watch for increased shortages of pet food and increased abundance of starved animals.
Tried under Nixon in 1970s and it didn't work.
There were many ways to get around this, make minor changes to product or packaging and deem it a new product with a new price.
Pets will get a lot leaner.
Price controls always lead to shortages. Chavez tried this with food and grocery stores had bare shelves.
Tried at least as far back as Roman Emperor Diocletian, and possibly 2000 years before that in Babylonia.
Never works.
Actually, that’s not true. They always work, just not as intended.
It will soon be impossible to find the pet food brands they like, maybe any dog food brand.
Didn’t they recently do this with toilet paper which led to a ......toilet paper shortage?
Where will pet food come from when the price is less than the cost of production?
This will clearly solve their economic woes!
The pet food faerie! Same as all other consumer goods in the Venezuelan economy.
Isn't socialism grand?
Have they tried raising the minimum wage for cats and dogs?

here is a Venezuelan blog post about it
the comments are pretty good
In Venezuela we have seen government take over of the oil industry and any number of price controls over the years.
What we don’t hear about is the follow-up and how it is affecting the people there.
I suspect these measures are introduced and later modified.
American oil execs and employees are in Venezuela. They are under constant threat of being kidnapped or mugged if they venture to far from their security.
I know that Chavez kicked out the “Americans” but they have been brought back in.
I wonder why we never hear the reports of the abductions and muggings ? or just the stories about how dangerous it really is to be an American in these countries.
We are there at the request and need by these governments, and the American public thinks these countries are “quaint” in their socialism.
That is what the blogs are for
Price ceilings bring shortages. Fido and Fluffy are going to have a hard time.
IMHO, it’s the left’s romance with a strong leader in a socialist country.
It’s their preconceived notion that people “must” be led by government.
They love Eva Peron.
Evita !!!
Because she cares.
Nevermind the results.
The left is so extraordinarily superficial I’m continuously surprised by it’s effectiveness.
