Obamacare and the Assault on Individual Liberty

It is an odd juncture in American politics when the president of the United States and the leading intellectual narrators for his political party are keen to ridicule individual liberty and limited government, cornerstones of the American constitutional tradition, as being outmoded and driven by contempt for minorities and the poor.

Such conserving of liberty, according to Hannan, is urgently needed today. For us, though, the major threat comes neither from self-aggrandizing kings nor from foreign dictators, but rather from progressive elites who, in defiance of the historical record, depict the Anglosphere as uniquely culpable for the world’s ills and who, in the name of equality and compassion, would shift more and more responsibilities away from individuals and the associations of civil society and to an imperious central government. Obama and his technocratic minions, in Hannan’s view, exemplify this tendency.

During WW2, The Socialist FDR Administration instituted wage and price controls on American Companies.

Companies could not raise wages, but they could increase benefits to attact workers that they wanted.

Hence, Companies started offering Medical Insurance to keep present employees, and to attract new employees.

Now our Socialized Society considers it a “right” for an employee, and their dependents to have part or all of their medical insurance paid for by the company that they work for.

So much for the millstone burden of a bad WW2 edict from FDR.

One great thing that could come out of the total collapse of CommieObamaCare is that ONLY the citizen is responsible for any insurance product that they choose to buy.

Thus, allowing Companies to lower the price of their goods and services to the customers by the amount that they had been paying for insurance for their employees, and their dependents.

In similar manner, the Socialist Labor Union Movement in the late 1800’s, and the Socialized FDR Wage Controls of WW2 have produced the relics of Minimum Wage Control and Governmental Labor rules that shackle the productivity of our Society.

Ronald Reagan was fond of saying “Businesses do not pay taxes, because consumers pay all the taxes.”

A business forced by an oppressive Government to pay a higher minimum wage to their workers will simply pass that additional expense on to the consumer in the form of higher prices.

Way back when there was a shortage of sugar and prices went up. The shortage went away, the prices stayed up. The price today seems not to have gone up much, but a “5#” bag now weighs #4 and costs the same. People get used to pain.

There is always “Capitalism”, the issue is how Capital is distributed.

Communism is really just another form of Capitalism where the State is the sole Capitalist.

Socialism does in fact reduce the state to a single economic unit, where all producers are state employees, and all others serve the state as consumers. That is, if autarky were possible. That would require a world government, which is what both fascism and communism aimed at.
