Weather Channel Says Safety at Risk in Dispute
ABC News ^ | 1/12/2014 | DAVID BAUDER

The Weather Channel asked its viewers Saturday to urge Congress to intervene in its business dispute with DirecTV, arguing that it can harm public safety if the satellite system pulls the network off the air for nearly 20 million viewers.

The network's contract with DirecTV expires at the end of Monday. If an agreement on how much DirecTV pays The Weather Channel is not reached by then, TWC will likely stop airing on the system.

The Weather Channel is asking for a "negligible" increase in what DirecTV pays to air the channel, spokeswoman Shirley Powell said. While hoping for an agreement, "right now it's not looking so good."

DirecTV notes that there are many other ways its customers can get weather forecasts.

Why should Congress get involved??

Heh. Got in a heated argument with a FReeper (!) because he thought Congress should make so-called à la carte channel selection the law [THE LAW, I TELL YOU!].

He just could not understand my resistance to that when it was obviously such a good idea. That's where we are now. If you favor something, then government should do it, by golly.

The Weather Channel used to be good with 24 hour weather. Now it is an entertainment arm of NBC often with too much entertainment, and weather only in between the documentary shows.

The same shows are on other channels like Discovery, Nat geo, History, ect.

When I want weather, I WANT WEATHER! And I don’t want to wait till the break between shows.

I think the internet is what is going to make it possible for us to pay for the channels we like and not the others

If it could harm public safety, then I think I should get free DirectTV.

Be careful what you wish for, even in jest...

Yeah.... we’ll end up with the obamaphone lady telling us how obama is getting her free cable. Free cable for the poor and additional cable taxes on the rich to pay for it....

What kind of idiot gives so much as a nickel to DirecTV?

Do people like surrendering their money to the democrat party of their own free will? Because that's what they are doing by paying for that crap called "DirecTV."

Are you confusing DirectTV with Dish Network?

Dish is Charlie Ergen, a devout Baraqqi supporter.

DTV is Mike White who contributes to Republicans.

I remember when the Weather Chanel had credibility. They gave actual weather information. Yesterdays high temp, low, and forecast going forward.

Now it is about naming winter storms, showing coast guard helicopters and tide impacts.

If it cost me one penny a month to have it on my Direct service, I vote no.

How can you do without them .... remember they brought you the feared “Polar Vortex”. Where would you have been without that ... mired in a outdated “Artic Front”, “Canadian Express”, “Cold Spell”, etc.? Panic, panic, we’re all gonna die if the Weather Channel goes off the air!!!!!!!

DTV refuses to carry Blaze Network TV, whereas Dish carries Blaze.

DTV most likely gives to both sides, but I don’t have time to research it.

You need to tell me why DTV is so great for refusing to carry Blaze.

The Weather Channel hardly ever shows any weather. They always have stupid shows on. And when they DO show weather, it is almost always for somewhere else interesting.

If i want weather from my TV, I switch to the local weather channel. Usually I use the computer.

Scuttlebutt says that Dish has/had a one year exclusivity deal with Mr. Beck/The Blaze, and DirecTV is currently negotiating with The Blaze, but won’t sign a deal that forces a rate increase to their subscribers. https://www.directly.com/p/directv-i-want-to-know-when-direct-tv-will-get-the-blaze-74817

DTV just went 10 rounds with other providers a few months ago and made them all blink. They are very good at pulling the rug out from under greedy oafs who think they can be wrung for more money at will, and they learned from the big Viacom scuffle way back.

And the thing is, they have to. BS and corporate propaganda and ad campaigns aside, satellite services just about everywhere are roughly equal. But if Internet-based video services get cheaper overall than satellite AND provide equal customer service, they’re screwed.
