The high-profile bullying case of a black student has thrust San Jose State under an intense spotlight to improve the college experience for its minority students and diversify its predominately white faculty.

But an analysis of demographic figures by this newspaper shows that a lack of racial diversity in academia runs wide and deep: The South Bay campus' faculty is more diverse than other major Bay Area universities and the state's two university systems.

At San Jose State, 59 percent of the faculty are listed as white, although 10 percent of the professors didn't specify a race. The faculty at UC Berkeley, a campus that prides itself on its progressive identity, is 77 percent white. At Stanford, it's 74 percent. Across the state, 76 percent of the University of California's faculty and 68 percent of Cal State's are white.

So the world of liberal professors existing on California college campuses is a society of white folks, with lifetime job security through tenure, absolute rule over a worshiping group of students, and permanent health care and income through a taxpayer funded retirement program. Hell I would be a liberal too. Life is good.

Just within the chemistry departments at three community colleges I teach at, in the bay area: 6 out of 7 of the new faculty hires have been women. I realize this is probably not statistically relevant but I believe this is a trend in other departments as well.

But knowledge is knowledge. How do you apportion knowledge to reflect diversity?

If 2+2 = 4, what difference does it make who tells you that? Now, of course in University, the knowledge is a little more complicated, so you want more intelligent people explaining that to you. So, you look for intelligence, not diversity. And, to be blunt, most minorities can’t cut it on the intelligence level.

It’s funny that the people who are always demanding diversity seem to ignore it when it come to sports.
