New details have come to light in this weekend's deadly officer-involved shooting outside a Yakima car wash.
YPD said the officer shot and killed Rocendo Arias because he saw him holding a gun in his car. Arias took a bullet to the head.
Investigators said Yakima Police Officer Casey Gilette saw a suspicious car parked at a car wash. After noticing it hadn't moved for an hour, YPD said Gilette approached Rocendo Arias's car. First on the driver's side, then the passenger's side and opened the door. The officer told investigators he saw Arias holding a gun.
"It appeared that he had some accessories to the handgun that he was trying to install on it or put pieces of this gun together," said Yakima police Captain Rod Light.
Gilette shot four times, hitting Arias once in the head. YPD Spokesperson Rod Light maintains the officer had reason to react.
"The deceased had the weapon not only in his hand, but he also had his finger on the trigger," said Light.
However, investigators learned that Arias' weapon wasn't a typical gun. It was an Airsoft gun, considered a replica that shoots plastic pellets. While these guns can fire at high velocity, they're not designed to be lethal. YPD said it's not clear if Arias pointed the gun at Gilette before the shooting...

Say what? The trigger of THE AIRSOFT GUN?
Execute first, ask questions later, I guess. Yes, it was 3am in the morning. Why didn't the officer call for backup if he was so concerned?
What was the reason for the confrontation? Just for the sake of confronting a peasant?
Don’t worry, the police will clear themselves of any wrongdoing.
I gave my Grand Son two airsoft guns for Christmas. They do look like the real thing from any distance but they also have a blaze orange ring around the muzzle which is very hard to not see.
After all, the deceased was just a peasant...
Airsoft guns usually have an orange tip at the end of the barrel, which Captain Light confirmed.
I believe this particular handgun had an orange tip," added Captain Light. "But based on our investigation I dont want to go into particulars and details of the position of the gun and where the officer was. It was 3 a.m., it was dark and again we havent interviewed this officer yet and we dont want to speculate."
Best not let any of The King's Men see your grandson with these dangerous weapons...
Hence the prompt dispatch.
So once again the mere possession of a firearm is justification of a death sentence.
I have never understood the idea of painting the tip of an Airsoft Gun Orange.
If a Criminal wanted the Police to think he had an Airsoft Gun rather than a real Firearm, he could simply paint the tip of the Barrel Orange to gain the advantage over any Officer he might encounter while committing a Crime.
Maybe it’s me, but it just looks like Liberal Idiocy in practice.
ping
Or the mere possession of something that LOOKS like a firearm. DEATH!!!
You get to yank open the peasant's car door, and cap him right there...
Can you hear the howling from here? ;-)
When a cop feels threatened by what appears to me a gun, he is trained to three tap center mass. Lesson learned, don’t threaten a cop with a weapon that appears to be a real gun.
Unless you are brandishing one in your own vehicle in view of a cop, then it is lethal- to you.
Yup.
Where does it ever indicate that the officer was ever “threatened”?
They haven’t interviewed the officer yet and they don’t want to speculate, but he can state categorically that the victim had his finger on the trigger. Nice job of positively knowing what you don’t positively know Chief.
Four shots, three misses. One in the head. Probably shot the kid in the head out of final frustration, and to remove any witnesses.
Lesson learned, dont threaten a cop with a weapon that appears to be a real gun.
The kid didn't threaten the cop. He was apparently trying to fix a broken Airsoft gun, and it probably didn't cross his mind that a) his Airsoft gun was for pointing at someone, and b) it's the death penalty for sitting in your car, going about your own business.
What if the guy in the vehicle was an off duty cop or even an undercover one.
If you see someone with a gun you just shoot them. Sounds like second degree murder to me.
Where does it say he was threatening him?
Well, as least no dogs were killed in the commission of this crime.
