Plane crashes, woman dies, survivor films and takes selfie

A month after a small plane crash in Hawaii, a surviving passenger shows GoPro footage and even a selfie taken during the ordeal.

Would you have done the same? Ferdinand Puentes was one of nine passengers in a 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan which suddenly suffered engine failure off Kalaupapa, Molokai in Hawaii last month. As he heard the engine fail and saw the plane heading for the water, one of his first instincts was to turn on his GoPro camera and film what might have been his own demise. As KHON-TV reports, Puentes knew the danger he was in, yet the decision to film as much as possible might perplex a few. He managed to get out of the plane alive and survived the crash. However, while he was floating on a seat cushion and wearing his life raft, he took a selfie.
Was the impulse to record just a natural reaction? After all, any bystander or news organization would have likely done the same thing. And these days everyone is using their phones to film just about everything they see. But wouldn't one's first instinct be to try to contact family and friends to say goodbye? Perhaps that did happen. The footage reflects a quite stunning lack of panic. The passengers behave in an orderly manner. There is no screaming or pushing. No one seems frantic at all. Loretta Fuddy, Hawaii's 65-year-old state director of health, died in the crash, despite managing to leave the plane. In watching Puentes talk to KHON-TV, though, it's evident that the footage brings back painful memories. Would everyone want to have such ready access to a reminder? Or would some prefer to forget? "You could have died," Puentes told KHON-TV. "There's so much variations that could have happened for the worse."

thanks for posting that, I still can't read the text, it must be something to do with my security settings...this is an interesting comment:

He got cut up on the rocks, but made it, and flagged down a passing driver for help.

So it was Hollstein who had blood on his shirt, we were confused about that.

I don’t see where it says there were not enough lifevests, but it is possible that a passenger might have exited the aircraft in such a hurry, they didn’t take the vest out of the pocket at the back of the seat in front of them.

All I am still trying to do is identify the survivors from the images we have access to.

I was able to read that page and checked on archive.org to make sure that the page hasn’t been changed since you looked at it. Holstein said he helped the male of a couple get his life vest inflated and on; the guy was holding onto a seat cushion and couldn’t get the life jacket open.

I was able to save some images off the ABC video and make some sense out of some of the people. The color of the shirt for the guy next to Rosa Key and MW1 threw me off, but I was able to look more closely at his elbow, and the elbow has lines on it that show up even when the elbow is in sunlight, which makes me think it is Jacob Key, who has a spiderweb tattoo around his left elbow. The shirt must just appear darker because of the water.

The image that I’ve got of Jacob Key inflating his life jacket is definitely Jacob Key, and on the video you can see that Rosa was underneath the wing at that point. She appears and is next to Jacob shortly after that. As the people came out of the plane and grabbed onto the wing they slid down the wing to make room for others, so Jacob and Rosa ended out at the end of the wing to make room for Fuddy and Yamamoto.

Holstein went toward the tail of the plane rather than down the wing. His face can be seen at the tail end, with a jacket he’d not yet put on and then a little later with it seeming to be on him.

There seems to be a man with short hair and dark skin in a dark maroon cut-away t-shirt behind Rosa while she and Jacob were on the wing trying to figure out how to inflate the life jackets. Neither Rosa nor Jacob have their jacket inflated when they’re on the wing by MW1 and Rosa was bobbing down into the water then. Holstein was swimming towards them; I think Rosa may have been the person he helped get the jacket inflated.

Whoever the guy with the dark skin was, he might have been the one Kawasaki held onto, although he didn’t yet have a life jacket on when he was behind Rosa. Or Holstein could have swum back to help Kawasaki. The guy with Kawasaki appears to have his arms in swimming position; maybe it was Holstein and he pulled Kawasaki to one of the cushions. The guy with dark skin might be the 70-year-old Asian guy.

There were 2 people who got off the plane before Puentes - one of them a guy in blue jean shorts and a bluish-purple shirt. I’d have to go look at that again to see for sure. I wonder if that was Holstein. I wonder when that photo of him was taken - if it was taken the day of the crash. He’s got a blue shirt on there. I’d have to get out my son’s laptop to try to see the video, looking for clues.

I may have a shot of Yamamoto helping Fuddy into the water. If he was in the seat across from her he was wearing a maroonish-red shirt, which would explain why there is a purplish tinge around him as well as around Fuddy.

Well, I’ve been at this longer than I should have. I still need to prepare for Sunday school tomorrow and get the kids to bed.

thanks for all that, I’m almost sorry to bring it up all over again, just wanted to check with you who that person in the brown shirt might have been.

If I were writing a novel — purely fiction and one of the characters was faking their death iId make sure there was a dummy in a picture complete with wig and glasses and spirit the real alive person to a “hospital or other location.
It would take a lot of co operation to pull such a hoax off but would certainly keep them away from being an unwilling witness

If I were writing a novel,,,,,,synthetic wig would never appear stringy and wet
There are many small island where she could live or even stay in the mountains of their recent visit
Spent only a week in HI , the week of japanese earthquake and the tsanmi which followed on the big island One thing became very apparent : the close ties and familial relationship of the natives. They’d do anything to protect their own from outside sources. You know that coast guard medical etc would all have “family” available in a crisis

Good basis for a novel .....

Nowhere would that be more true than on Kalaupapa. The DOH Administrator is in charge of literally EVERYTHING there. As close to a commune as we will hopefully ever get.

For instance, the Administrator does the contracts for all the repairs in Kalaupapa. I suppose part of that is because the DOH is in the process of figuring out how to hand over the whole property to the National Park Service when the last of the leprosy residents dies, and it may also have to do with one barge bringing in the heavy supplies for building, etc.

What that means, though, is that those who come into Kalaupapa to work are probably there because Mark Miller contracted them to work there. Mark Miller arranges for refrigerators and stoves to be put in the houses. He gives the food allowances. He makes sure the USPS still delivers mail there. Etc. Mark Miller is the papa providing for everybody.

Ferdinand Puentes was there repairing the roof of St Francis Catholic Church, the parish of the priest who “gave last rites” to Fuddy, because Mark Miller contracted him to be there. If Holstein was there to do something regarding his company, it’s because his company was contracted by Mark Miller to do something in Kalaupapa. Rosa Key was there to attend the community meeting because she works closely with the HDOH to engineer the transition of the property to National Park Service.

A person has to get a permit from the HDOH in order to even go into Kalaupapa. So even the tourists can be pre-screened by the HDOH.

There are no hostile witnesses there.

Started reading all the comments last night from about 450 pr do and realized you all had described each individual species of tree in the forest and that the above story line as far fetched as it sounded would certainly tie together each unanswered question. It’s speculation/brainstorming nothing else But it certainly would relieve Ms F of her predicament created by O and explain the undocumented pilot why her assistant and “friend” didnt hold on and a reason to film. ....not for us but to satisfy 0

What a movie! Final frame : Ms F walking up a mule path to an cave in the mountain over looking the ocean......FUBO

Are those permits public information?

Does anybody know what kind of shirt that is that Puentes was wearing that day? It doesn’t look like something a roofer would wear.

While you’re checking that out check to see how many of those on board would have connections to the good father who possible heard Ms F confession and even was her confidant

Again if I were writing a novel Id have him be the central organizer of the plot

Good question. I wonder...

This being the HDOH, if they were public, we could expect them to respond in about 2 years. I don’t know any reason why they wouldn’t be public.

Puentes was wearing a yellow shirt, which is different than the shirt he was wearing in the morning when he snapped a photo of himself on the plane awaiting take-off to Kalaupapa - the only time he posted a pic of himself traveling. In that pic he was wearing a grayish shirt that said, I believe, Pacific Island Construction. In these pics he’s wearing a yellow shirt.

This involves the NTSB, the USCG, Richard Schuman, and Clyde Kawasaki all hiding the existence of the extra person on board. The NTSB and USCG are both part of Obama’s regime, and the first (test?) Cessna engine failure was off Maui 50 days earlier - 3 days after Doug Vogt filed his case naming Fuddy as a defendant.

Hoosiermama, I see two crucial problems w the plot above. First, three can keep a secret if two of them are dead. I.e.: there is too slim a chance that eight or nine ppl cd safeguard such a secret. My $ wd be on Puentes to spill the beans. He just seems like that type of person/personality [though that is a superficial impression; I don’t claim to know him well].

More importantly, you wd once again face the problem (mentioned previously) of finding 8 or 9 ppl willing to endure a forced sea landing. This is the most dangerous type of forced landing. Granted there is an 80% survival rate [of the initial impact; the odds of dying shoot up in the aftermath (though most of that is hypthermia-related, & wdn’t apply to HI)] but look at it this way. Someone hands you a five-shot pistol. They tell you only one bullet is in the chamber. So give it a spin, put the barrel to your ear and pull the trigger.

Anyone who wd do this is (1) young, (2) drunk, and/or (3) stupid. A one in five chance of dying is too high a risk for any intelligent, commonsense individual to take unnecessarily.

[Note: the 80% survival rate includes those who survive w injuries. So in addition to worrying about whether they wd live or die, the participants in this scheme wd also be worried about possible injuries. For instance, in the Miracle on the Hudson flt I mentioned previously, all survived but five sustained serious injuries, including deep gashes and a cracked sternum.]

Which isn’t to say a very good novel cd not be fashioned from these basic ingredients. It most likely cd be. To be believable, however, it wd need to overcome the hurdles mentioned, imho.

No hiding an extra person if the extra is a dummy to look like one of the passengers .... If I were writing the novel

The reason I asked about the shirt Puentes was wearing is because it looks like some type of gear one would wear while engaged in sports. Is there such a thing as a scuba shirt? Reminds me of the skin-tight shirts that skiers or maybe even surfers wear. I don’t know much about athletic gear. I didn’t know that earlier in the day he took a photo of himself in a different shirt.

In the plane videos, after the crash, whoever has the camera (we’re told it’s Puentes reaching for his life vest) is wearing a thin, tight, long-sleeved yellow shirt that looks like nylon spandex.

Yamamoto was wearing swim trunks as he left the site of Fuddy’s last rites, but he might have borrowed that from someone.

SO if we go with your first premise: keeping secrets and people dying should we expect some unfortunate accidents in the near/ distant future?

Motivation to be apart of this. 1. $$$$$ 2. loyalty ( particularly if you/ hour group don’t want to be part of or feel threatened by an organized group - like the government! Think of it as the HI version of the French underground)

Re: landing. Wasn’t the pilot not registered with the airline but a last minute replacement. What’s his background? In the movie I’d use a military-special force trained stunt pilot. Photographer says they’ve become good friends. I’d have them serving together years ago as part of a team. In fact maybe others on board could have been united this way in a previous war a brotherhood -A team reunion Another sub plot. One more death defying mission for the death defying (maybe once rediculed team)
The photographer taking pictures for his dad who’s in a wheelchair and can’t take part
The plot thickens!
