With the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program facing a bleak future in the Democratic-controlled Senate, President Obama is taking the lead in pressuring Congress to temporarily restore benefits for the 1.3 million long-term unemployed Americans who were cut off when the program (Long-term unemployed face life without emergency benefits) on Dec. 28.
Mr. Obama will continue a public show of support for an extension in a speech Tuesday, where he will be accompanied by Americans who have lost their benefits. In addition those who have already been dropped from the program, 1.9 million Americans will lose benefits in the next six months if Congress doesnt act.
[snip]...Mr. Obama increased the frequency of his request for a fix, and made it the topic of his first weekly address of 2014.

- corresponding reductions in aid to Planned Parenthood
- corresponding reductions in aid to ACORN or whatever it’s called now
- etc
point out his crap. make him pay for it
if it comes out of “employer’s pocket”, does that not mean employer has less in their pocket to pay as wages or for new hires or growing the business?
Of course not. According to Democrats all employers have huge pockets stuffed with a never-ending source of money. /s
So, you would pay out 26 weeks worth of benefits in the first week of unemployment? Or 99 weeks in the first week?
A better solution is to pay out a decreasing amount each week. Start at the normal amount and decrease the benefit by $10 to 20 a week. That would inspire a job search.
And....while we are all watching we are seeing close to a Billion spent on the farce called Obamacare and the web site to sign up. Obviously never meant to work, the Obamacare Web Site was intentionally sabotaged from the get-go as no computer expert (as was claimed) could have unintentionally created such a mess.....in short, it was never meant to work, just meant to pay back friends of O & M with America's little 'ol treasury. True to his race, this little dictator is emptying the safe before he leaves......
good idea.
“”If paid in a lump sum most people would have incentive to find work immediately.

Very true. I know many people that just coast along until it looks like the money will stop coming. Only when faced with no income do they get on the ball to find work. And so many people turn down jobs when they are on unemployment because sitting in moms basement is a whole lot easier.
Start at full benefit amount and reduce it each week until it just disappears.

The “employers pocket” is also used to pay for overhead, utilities, trucks, repairs, insurance and a gob of other things. If I could run a business without all those pesky things I could hire more people and pay them more.
That's the way unemployment benefits worked for years. I have been both employer and employee, so I can verify that the employer pays a rate based upon the remuneration to each employee AND the employer's history of layoffs, i.e. if you never lay people off, the percentage of salary which you pay for the insurance premium goes down.
However, my understanding is that these 'extensions' are both Federally mandated and Federally funded. In other words, welfare subsidized by the taxpayer.
I have not been an employer during the Obamanation, so I would defer to someone with more complete knowledge.
Yes, I thought as much.
The EXTENSIONS are not funded in the same manner as normal unemployment benefits, rather they are:
“EUC is a 100% federally funded program that provides benefits to individuals who have exhausted regular state benefits. The EUC program was created on June 30, 2008, and has been modified several times. Most recently, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (P.L. 112-240) extended the expiration date of the EUC program to January 1, 2014.”

Do federal regulations require employers to pay for all of those utilities instead of opting out and choosing to hire more workers and pay them more?
My understand now is indeed that there are much more jobs available out there than people think, but that not working has literally become too attractive to people. And that there are whole industries that have more job openings than a applicants but for numerous reasons, this being one, they still don’t have takers for all their positions.
In addition to having it be 6 months (maybe 9 if there is a legit recession) and having to show proof that you looked for jobs there could also be a way to provide monitoring to those who are looking for work and ensure that they conduct job interviews properly and provide proof that they did their job searches properly. And show that they looked at ALL available jobs - in other words, cut off unemployment benefits to anyone who is only looking at jobs they find attractive and cannot show proof that they seriously considered all job opportunities that were handed to them. Now I know that local, state and federal gov’ts can and would find plenty of ways to screw this system up but I suspect it would still work way better than what we have now.
I know someone who’s been unemployed for over a year. At know time has the state of Md ever checked to see if she’s applied for any job at all. She just goes on line and lies. She also just had knee surgery and can’t work but is still receiving unemployment. Nobody seems to care if you’re really looking for work. It’s just become a scam.
if she had knee surgery, isn’t she also on disability? From what I gather, there’s a good chance she is taking in unemployment and disability. Disability claims, btw, take up way more public resources than welfare and probably more than unemployment too.
If you have received the mandatory 26 weeks which was extended to 99 weeks, thus Unemployment Compensation should be done with. The employer pays for the insurance and what is the government stating that the employers are to continue paying the insurance. This is just a redistribution of wealth.
She is not receiving disability. Even if she could get approved, it would take a while. In the meantime you are not supposed to be collecting unemployment unless you are available and ready to work, which she is not. She doesn’t want employment to know she really can’t work so she can keep receiving it.
My real point is nobody is checking to actually see if any of these people are actually looking for employment or even able to work. It has just become another welfare program.
“”My real point is nobody is checking to actually see if any of these people are actually looking for employment or even able to work. It has just become another welfare program.”””
that’s because the system is overwhelmed. There are so many people collecting that they cannot do a proper audit of the claims. As long as you don’t kick up a red flag you can slide along for a long time.
Original Chinese Proverb:
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.
2012 White House Revision:
Give a man a welfare check, a free cell phone with unlimited free minutes, cash for his clunker, food stamps, Section 8 housing, free contraceptives, Medicaid, 99 weeks of unemployment, free meds, and he will vote democrat the rest of his life-—even after he’s dead.
It got wasted in fraudulent loans.
Well when their unemployment runs out then they should just get their Obamaphone, Obamahome, Obamaloan, WIC, SNAP, WELFARE, that ought to net them more than they make working right there... Nothing like dis-incentivizing work, nothing could be more unamerican but hey welcome to the fundamental change... Everyone should quit working and chill out smoke pot all day and let the stupid people that want to work pay for all of it... LOL...
