1,600 Applicants Flood MD Ice Cream Factory for 36 Jobs
Breitbart ^ | 6 Jan 2014, 6:03 AM PDT | Ben Shapiro

Thanks to persistent unemployment and low availability of low-skill jobs, Shenandoah Family Farms’ ice cream plant in Hagerstown, Maryland has received over 1,600 applicants for a grand total of 36 jobs. Many of those applicants are former workers at the Good Humor plant that was bought by Shenandoah Family Farms. “You’d think that after 20-some-years working someplace at least somebody would think you area a good person, that you’d show up on time every day, and that would be worth something,” Luther Brooks, a 50-year-old former worker at the plant told the Washington Post. “I can’t get nothing. I’ve tried.”

Nonetheless, both Republicans and Democrats in Washington continue to maintain that America requires more unskilled, cheap labor via immigration, despite the loss of 6 million factory jobs between 2000 and 2009. That has been the pitch from immigration reform advocates, who insist that the cure-all for the American economy is an endless supply of less educated migrants to fill “do the jobs Americans won’t.”

Meanwhile, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D) is pushing a $4.5 million effort to retrain workers in other industries, including “green jobs.” While 85 former workers at the plant have taken advantage of the program, just 49 have been able to secure permanent employment.

That's the Democrats for you. Destroy sustainable, productive jobs, then get people dependent on government programs to retrain them to go into fad-of-the-day, unsustainable BS jobs. Then when the BS jobs start to dry up, give subsidies to those companies or retrain the workers to go into other BS jobs.

My first thought was: Was Good Humor a union workplace?

The press will spin it: “It’s because everyone loves ice cream”.

I have a great idea... lets raise the minimum wage to $15/hour, so next time it won’t be 1600 applicants (it will be 3200) and it won’t be for 36 jobs (it will be for 18 jobs).

I bet the reason why employers want new immigrant workers is because they not having roots or houses are willing to go where the jobs are.

Western Maryland has little industry and I bet property values are suppressed(so they wont sell them till forced to), but there are plenty of jobs here in Central Maryland.

And thats where the immigrants are moving to.

Amazingly the workers in this plant (before it was closed down by the original owner) were making $26/hour. No wonder it closed up.

Didn’t say how much the new company pays. Sounds a bit like Hostess Baking.

Apparently 99 weeks of unemployment benefits have just ran out.

Luther Brooks, a 50-year-old

HR department reject 50s and older out of hand, even though it's against the law they just say it's for any reason but age.

$13. And... “We have no benefits at all,” he said. “We’re going to look into the Obamacare thing if we can ever get online to do it.”

But, glad to have a job.

People don’t stop to realize that an older worker may be a better employee, but with ObamaCare, the cost of insuring an older worker is much, much higher than a younger worker.

I neutralized that issue by having my own personal health insurance. Of course, the individual insurance plans have all but disappeared.

It’s not fair .. but whoever said the DEMOCRATS know how to play fair ..??

I wonder whose policies ol' Luther has been voting in the past 20-some-years?
