One of the men seeking the GOP nomination for Nebraskas open Senate seat is proposing moving the capital from Washington to his home state, saying it would be an effective way to cut out the lobbyists and special interests that have turned Capitol Hill into an ATM dispensing taxpayers money.
Thats it, the way to cure the incredible ineffectiveness and dysfunction of both parties in Washington we move the Capitol to Nebraska, Ben Sasse, a university president and former Bush administration official, said in 30-second campaign ad that ran in Nebraska over the weekend during the NFL playoff games.
Mr. Sasse said he doesnt actually believe there are the votes in Congress to move the capital, but said proposing the move is a thought experiment designed to pose the question of what the founders would think if they saw the influence-peddling and extent of federal intervention in Americans lives.
I think that they, Nebraska work-a-day folks, think that were on the precipice of national decline and they dont think Washington gets it at all, Mr. Sasse said in a telephone interview.

Articulate, strongly conservative, and with a proven business turn-around track record, Benn Sasse "gets it".
A fellow to keep an eye on...
(note to WaTimes: it's "Capitol", not 'capital'. You shouldn't need to be told this...
A great idea.
Not a bad idea. Would cut down on travel expenses. Could you imagine who would run for congress knowing they would be living in the mddle of Nebraska for half of the year? You might even get people who are interested in the welfare of the country instead of getting rich.
Excellent idea.
The Camp Whores would just move as well..................
Better yet would be some relatively small island in the Mississippi or some small isolated peninsula. I think several of the states bordering the Mississippi have such peninsulas cut off from the rest of the state. All you really need is the capitol, the white house and the supreme court building.
All the federal agencies can telecommute or rent local office space if they really need a physical presence near the capital.
As for DC and Norther Virginia, they can turn it into a National Historical Park and still get the tourist trade.
There should be no capital. There is no reason senators and representatives shouldn’t be able to vote via computers, or save up all the votes and do them in a 2 month period of work in DC with the rest of the time spent working in your home state.
The Capitol is the bulding housing Congress. The capital is the seat of government.
hear, hear
LOL, I changed my spelling based on the article. I thought I must be wrong LOL
So is this guy an adherent of the “John Titor prophecy”?
I remember reading that things really went to heck when air conditioning came about and the politicians could “legislate” all summer long in DC.
I once read a comment here that called for members the U.S. Congress to discuss and vote on measures electronically from their home states. No need to go to D.C. at all.
Correct, and he’s talking about the building.
I have thought for a long time that we should consider moving the Us Capitol to the Midwest.
I am tired of the political class and elitist attitudes of the Northeast and West coast liberals toward the ordinary, sane person who is living outside their clique.
Currently our federal government class is behaving immaturely, sort of like a HS Sophomore group of bullies. They disdain anyone who is not from their so-called “class”.
Nebraska would not be my choice, but is worth considering. I always thought maybe St. Louis would be good as it is geographically in about the center of the country.
Just my 2 cents worth.
That is a problem. I have actually thought something similar about reducing the lobbiests; but, with today's communication devices, I'm not sure it is possible.
However, I have toyed with the idea of moving the congress/senate around for each season. Have Jan/Feb in Duluth, MN. Have July in Phoenix, AZ. Have Oct/Nov in Seattle (I live here, it rains in those months). Anyway, you get the picture. I am trying to make it as uncomfortable for them as possible, and maybe they will not want to spend so much time thinking up new ways to be a problem in our lives.
Talk about short-sightedness!
Move the Capitol and they will follow the money.
It might take a week, but K Street and the cronies would just relocate.

If this is the level of judgment by this political wannabe, VOTERS BEWARE!
Hell I want ankle bracelets and 24 hour surveillance on them.
Let’s move the capital to Imperial, Nebraska—or Broken Bow.
