Sanctuary for wounded warriors gets slapped with $10,000 tax bill
January 3, 2014 by Joe Saunders
A Virginia couple who put up $1 million and 37 acres of rural land to help brothers in arms are learning the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished.
Ken and Julia Falke, who opened the Boulder Crest Retreat for Wounded Warriors in September, are on the receiving end of a $10,000 property tax bill from Loudoun County.
bouldercrest0103Ken Falke told Fox News in a story broadcast Thursday that the couple operating the site as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization is providing wounded veterans with services the county cant afford to deliver, the state cant afford to deliver, and I guess arguably the federal government is not delivering.

“Property taxes should be low and be paid by ALL property owners with no reductions, exemptions, or special services.”
No disagreement. But you are dreaming if you think that the current property tax system will change for the better.
Ummm....No. Taxes are nothing more than government control.
That happens a lot here in Texas,
Then just refer to them as tax slaves since they truly own nothing, they just lease it from the state.
Maybe your point is too subtle for me. Are you saying if the property is taxed then you do not truly own it? That could be said of any tax.
Hummm...so property taxes should be abolished....?
How do you propose local governments pay for services...
Believe me am for low taxes, but local governments can’t operate on thin air....
Popman - Our assessor doubled property taxes in my county twice (2008 & 2010). When we protested the new tax rates, the first elected bureaucrat in the chain became irate with the bunch of us and basically told us to pound sand because the directive came from the state comptrollers office. Yes, the comptroller didn't win re-election, but we are still stuck with her poor choice. That takes food out of our family's mouths for the benefit of government.
The new governor is Clinton confident Terry McAullife.
“FreedomNotSafety - Absolutely. When a government decides that you must pay a tax or they confiscate property which you paid for, it’s wrong.”
It is wrong for the government to decide you must pay a tax? How do you propose to finance government?
Confiscation is probably wrong under most present day practices.
Darn skippy, especially when it's used as a weapon against people. They don't have to tax every stinking thing under the sun, nor do they have to make taxes excessive. Do yourself a favor; add up all the taxes you pay. All of them. Don't you think YOU could find a better use for those funds?
How do you propose to finance government?
As little as possible. Do we really need redundant government agencies? Do we really nee school district superintendent that make 6-figure incomes, and have huge bureaucratic staffs, yet teachers suffer and students are sub-par?
Come to think of it, I don';t have children. Why should I be forced to subsidize someone else's kid?
Confiscation is probably wrong under most present day practices.
Uh....no. Refuse to pay what the taxman demands and see what happens.
