Leaked documents now show what we all suspected: the NSA can turn your iPhones microphone and camera on and off without you knowing.
According to Der Spiegels website:
The NSAs ANT division develops implants for mobile phones and SIM cards. One of these is a spyware implant called DROPOUTJEEP designed for the first generation of iPhones which was still in development in 2008, shortly after the iPhones launch. This spyware was to make it possible to remotely download or upload files to a mobile phone. It would also, according to the catalog, allow the NSA to divert text messages, browse the users address book, intercept voicemails, activate the phones microphone and camera at will, determine the current cell site and the users current location, etc. ANTs technicians also develop modified mobile phones, for use in special cases that look like normal, standard devices, but transmit various pieces of information to the NSA that can be swapped undetected with a targets own mobile phone or passed to informants and agents. In 2008, ANT had models from Eastcom and Samsung on offer, and it has likely developed additional models since.

Well komrade, after all you have nothing to hide, right?
If NSA can do it, so can anyone.
No more unaccessible battery products for me.
Sadly this won’t do much to Apple in the long term. As an owner of an iPhone and an iPad, I’ve turned off every last “convenience” tool and still don’t feel completely secure/private.
The wife and I will definitely be going the Droid route next time around.
Its not just your phone calls its YOU they are listening to

But, this is the 21st Century. A grand era of technology. Buck Rogers and H.G. Wells would be so proud of our technological advancements.
But so would Stalin, Mao and Hitler. The NSAs recently leaked shopping catalog is chilling and would harsh the mellow of any regular Joe.
Make sure you check out the phone that’s hosting the Droid system. My friend has one (don’t remember which one it is, but I believe he’s got Verizon) and he can’t remove the battery.
Google! Now that's a company you can really trust your privacy to.
The video on the page is top notch - a presentation by an expert, journalist and security researcher Jacob Appelbaum.
I have a cheap $10 a month phone I carry for calling 911 if I trip and fall while walking. If they can turn it on and use the camera more power to them since I have not been able to figure that out.
When I do carry it, it is off and in my pocket. So if they want to listen to an old man huffing and puffin while walking and watch the inside of a pocket, well, it is still wrong.
I wonder how those that work for the NSA can sleep at night knowing they have turned traitor to the American people, violating constitutional protection in the name of protecting us.
Shame on them, and shame on us for allowing it.
They'll get some nice shots of the inside of pockets and a lot of nice fart audio.
I sure hope they don’t screw up my progress in the Simpson’s “Tapped Out” game...
TSA - Wealth transfer by theft of valuables.
You’re fooling yourself if you think they can’t access a Droid just as readily as an iPhone or any other “smart” phone.
They can't check the phone if the battery's been removed - I believe that was his point.
Damn. This is going to put a serious kink in my plans to take over the world
What scares me more is the ability of nefarious agencies to plant information on unsuspecting parties and then arrest them for crimes which they never committed.
