Kerry reportedly says he will consider freeing Jonathan Pollard as part of prisoner swap

Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to the Middle East in the first week of the new year amid a flurry of reports in the Israeli press that he has said he would consider freeing convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Israel's Channel 10 TV station first reported Friday that Kerry offered to free Pollard as part of an exchange for the release of a fourth group of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails as peace talks resume between the two sides. The third of four groups is scheduled to be released Monday, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Before I get flamed, please do your homework. Most everyone who has objected to Pollard’s release has mistaken his acts with Aldrich Ames, who is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole. Ames should have been executed IMHO.

Pollard has been behind bars for more than 20 years, and is due to be released in 2015. Releasing him at this point — or even discussing it as a possibility — is just political pandering.

It's also worth noting that Pollard was eligible for parole ten years after he was sentenced, but he has never applied for parole. If Pollard stays behind bars, it's largely his own doing.

Pollard did not betray America. The stuff he gave Israel was supposed to go to Israel anyway, but anti-Semitic Casper Weinberg withheld them in the hope that Saddam Hussein’s Iraq would successfully gas the Jews of Israel (Pollard is a hero). It is a pity that Pollard pled guilty because he would’ve had a fighting in court given all the grief that Iraq has given us; e.g., The Stark, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, etc.
