The end of unemployment checks for more than a million people on Saturday is driving out-of-work Americans to consider selling cars, moving and taking minimum wage work after already slashing household budgets and pawning personal possessions to make ends meet.
Greg and Barbara Chastain of Huntington Beach, Calif., put their two teenagers on the school lunch program and cut back on dining out after losing their T-shirt company in June following a dispute with an investor.
They've exhausted their state unemployment benefits and now that the federal extensions are gone, unless they find jobs the couple plan to take their children out of their high school in January and relocate 50 miles east where a relative owns property so they can save on rent.

We can’t.

They will announce it as soon as the republican leadership can get a conference call together. I figure by Monday morning.
Huh? I read this and scratched my head as it makes no sense. If anything, having benefits end will make people more motivated to look for jobs, not less.
It's strange, but here's how it works. You lose your job. You apply for unemployment. Those that don't qualify for unemployment are not counted as unemployed(!). To collect unemployment you have to document your attempts to find work. If you fail to find work over a period of time you lose your unemployment and you are no longer counted as unemployed.
The official unemployed numbers are those collecting unemployment "benefits." The real number of unemployed americans is something very different (see shadowstats.com)
“cut back on dining out”
Oh, God...the horrors...and in THIS country!!!!
In this horrendous job market, if I were to become unemployed tomorrow, Id be on six interviews by midweek and be employed by Friday. Thats because I took the time (shudder) to work hard (puke puke puke) and become excellently skilled in my field. Then I worked (OMG) really hard (NFW!!!) and developed a great reputation around town.

LOL. How disgusting of you.
I also at the ripe old age of 44 went back to school to be a nurse. Why would ANYONE in their right mind do this? I guess, I dunno ...because there are 100’s of jobs in nursing? I graduated and had at least 10 managers stuffing their cards in my hands ...in fact, I don’t think I’d even graduated yet.
Ask most of these people if they’d EVER take a job in healthcare ...”Ew, no way ...can’t stand the sight of (blood/vomit/puke/crap)(pick one). They wouldn’t be caught dead ...too much work.
I agree with you to a point, but with the economy the way it is (ruined by government regulation/manipulation), one of the great advantages of the US labor market - mobility - has been lost. It’s hard to sell a house compared to 10 years ago. And, many people are STILL upside-down or close to it, leaving them with nothing to move with.
Under these conditions, I would not as a young person BUY a house until I was in my late 30’s and pretty well established in a career. And even then, I would advise buying “too little” of a house - the more expensive a house is, the harder it is to sell, good times or bad.
A friend of mine became a doctor, and I told him that I thought that I would have been a good one, except that (a.) I really don’t like most people, and (b.) I hate “icky stuff”. He suggested that I should have become a radiologist, because those are exactly the qualifications!
Oh, the shame of it - WORKING!!!
Really? Do you have some data to back that up?

I know ..... I am mean but they have voted for obozo twice and have defended everything he has done or said. We will see how they deal with the consequences of their actions.
They usually give us one of those goats for Christmas. You know the kind that you never see or have no idea if a goat was donated to a starving family in Africa?
I call them imaginary goats. Well we didn't get one this year. Things are tough in Libville.
Why didn’t anyone ask Pelosi how people with pulses could possibly still be unemployed in these fabulous Obama economic boom times?
In Nanners mind unemployment creates jobs.
Pelosi, along with a fair amount of GOP Establishment types, really believe paying UE benefits helps the economy.
Huntinton Beach is a very affluent neighborhood. There will be more waves of business failures, spending cuts, layoffs and unemployment benefits ending, and some of those will be rather large. The economic decline is chewing folks out of the middle and upper class, few by few (if millions will qualify as a few in the near future).
Huntington Beach, even.
Is there a reason why you violated copyright restrictions in your #1? Excerpting exists for a reason. Weren’t you aware of that?
Those benefits should only last 6-months tops.
Unemployment benefits pay less than they made, and those collecting don't seem
to have a problem with that. But Work for less? GASP!
