(CNN) -- A man known for his grand 6 million-light Christmas display was found shot and killed in his home on Friday morning.

A family member found John Chakalos, 87, in his home in Windsor, Connecticut, according a Windsor police department press release. The medical examiner's office ruled that Chakalos died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The police are conducting an active homicide investigation, based on the condition of the body when it was found and because police did not recover a weapon at the scene, Windsor police Capt. Tom Lepore said.

Windsor police were first to arrive on scene, and the department called in the Connecticut State Police major crimes squad to assist, Lepore said.

Detectives are working to piece together events in the weeks leading up to Chakalos' death, Lepore said.

Chakalos and his wife Rita, who died a week before Thanksgiving, were known in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, and the surrounding area for their elaborate Christmas display at the home they owned there.

Good grief! That will ruin someone’s holiday spirit.

I would check the police logs for complaints from neighbors about his Christmas lights and/or music.

What a shame. I’d seen video of his light display before, it was beautiful.

I had wonderful neighbors in Tennessee; still get holiday cards. My neighbors in Red Hampshire are absolute b*stards. So yeah...check the neighbors.

I have a neighbor transplanted from somewhere up in New England and he (and spouse) is just like your R.H. types. Horrible people. They’ve ticked off everyone in the neighborhood over the past several years.

It is a given that they are hardcore wun worshippers of the first order.

The home and property of John and Rita Chakalos in Chesterfield, N.H., is covered in Christmas lights for the holidays. Every year, for a suggested donation of a non perishable food item, the public is welcome to drive through the property to see the display. The collected food is donated to Joan's Food Pantry in Chesterfield, N.H. (Zachary P. Stephens/Brattleboro Reformer)

Red Hampshire people aren’t happy unless they are making everyone else around them miserable. I avoid any social gatherings for the next several days...people take the L-rd’s name in vain even on Christmas day.

Up in Newton, MA there was a family that had a Christmas light display for more than 35 years.

This year they got an angry letter from someone who said the display was tacky and they should keep their religion to themselves.

I was thinking the same, considering he couldn't live without his wife; but the article states no weapon was found at the scene.

Seems like he was a genuinely decent man. I hope they find his killer.
