Paul Ryan Doubles Down on Cutting Veteran Pensions (this is Presidential Material dissing Vets?)

House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has doubled down on his move to cut pensions for military veterans in a USA Today op-ed published Sunday.

In the op-ed, Ryan opens up by highlighting the CBO estimate that the deal he cut with Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) would result in at least $20 billion in deficit reduction. “The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law,” Ryan wrote. “We think it's a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget.”

As Breitbart News has reported, Ryan’s and Murray’s budget deal does not reduce the deficit. In fact, the deal raises the deficit by at least $15.5 billion because of a series of gimmicks that Ryan and Murray employed in the accounting of the deal -- namely, double counting of savings like the tactic which was employed in Obamacare, and the failure to include an estimate of the interest on the borrowed money for the first couple of years of increased spending. These are only a few among a series of other misleading statements Ryan has made about the deal.

The rest of Ryan’s op-ed is devoted to defending his decision to cut $6 billion worth of military pensions. "One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees,” Ryan wrote. “The federal government has no greater obligation than to keep the American people safe and we must take care of the

I voted for Ryan. I understand his strategy in this matter. He got rolled by the Democrats. I won’t ever vote again for somebody who was stupid enough to get rolled by the Democrats. And he’s only making it worse. If you get rolled, apologize and shut up. Even Cracker Barrel understands that. He came out and lied to try and cover up getting rolled. He gave the retired Veterans COLA to the Democrats to use for HEADSTART and Education. That was the deal. That’s why it was a “Compromise”. It didn’t have a damn thing to do with putting that money into the Defense budget. It’s already there. He looked good, but he was stupid and got rolled and then lied to us about it. I’ll never vote for someone like that. He could get me back if he would admit it and apologize, but he’ll never do that.

I am comfrontable stating that no one in law enforcement faces the kind of danger or hardship over their entire career that I and my fellow Marines faced humping M16’s through the jungles and rice paddies of Viet Nam for 13 months.

OK, then to take your argument one step further, shouldn’t we RAISE the rate of increase? Say 10% per year? 20%? Double?

Well, fine. I’d like to exempt you and your fellow marines who humped M16s from COLA reductions. Because you’re awesome. But, do you understand the cost to your grandchildren of failing to make across-the-board cuts to federal spending? Are you comfortable with that?

I think vets would take the cuts, with some whining, if it was part of a comprehensive package of cuts. The problem is that this is a comprehensive package of spending with very few cuts.

Just another Republicrat. Any chance of running for pres. he just lost.

Yeah, tell that to Drole, McLame, and Mittens. Those "Republicrats" wound up on top of the ticket.

And this rather porcine Obambi hugger from Jersey, is considered "top of the ticket" material.

Then you add to that Ann Coulter's defection from common sense last election added to Gloria Allred's drudging up 7 or 8 worthless women to testify that whoever is at the top of ourticket molested them or worse, and you have the same crap that we've had for how many elections?

Add to that the hundred of thousands of ballots being printed right now to drop off at any precinct that needs them, and we've got NO CHANCE IN HOLY HELL this next year or in 2016. How's that for optimism, huh? Don't forget, a pessimist is an informed optimist.

What Paul Ryan has done is immoral.... Paul Ryan sold out the veterans so that he could sell out The Tea Party.

Yes.

Go over to the AARP boards and write that and see the response you get. If you are on patrol in the military, and an enemy grenade drops in the middle of the patrol, Soldiers will do one of two things. They will dive for cover or they will jump on the grenade. Look at the Medal Of Honor citations. A lot of them jump on the grenade. What doesn’t happen is one Soldier grabbing another Soldier and throwing him on the grenade. That ‘s not just poor form, your fellow Soldiers will shoot you. We retired Veterans understand sacrifice. We lived it. What we find really repugnant is somebody who didn’t put in twenty years or more in the service (Was Ryan ever in the service?) throwing us on the grenade so he can claim some kind of fame.
And your comparing emergency service workers to Soldiers is insulting to Soldiers. Probably not intentionally, but still insulting. I respect and admire emergency service workers. Some of them willingly go into dangerous situations. But it is nowhere near the same thing.

You’re right about Murray; but she’s just another cookie-cutter democrat. Any democrat at all working on that deal would have screwed the military. Paul supposedly embodied the republican ethic of respecting the military, and it’s the sudden realization that republicans are the new democrats that has everyone so shocked, leading to outrage.

Note also that “war hero” McCain also voted for the deal over in the senate.

Federal employees have had cost of living increases frozen for several years, but that's not the point. The point is that we have so many more places we could easily cut waste, but this deal just maintains the status quo. The meager increase in employee contributions for federal service only applies to new hires.

Ryan is an idiot because he thinks this is the path back to normal (legal) budgeting. It is giving the Democrats cover for the next election. If anything becomes unpalatable for them later they will fall back on "baseline plus" and another endless stream of CR's.

Ryan should seriously consider switching parties. It would make him irresistible in liberal WI.

I checked a couple of sources and got figures of 21 million and 26 million for the current number of veterans. I took a number somewhere in the middle - 23 million - and divided $6 billion by that number. My answer was $260.87 per person. How are they coming up with these $100,000 per person figures?

As I said, status quo with a socialist WH, Senate and media is not a bad thing.

I'm still trying to figure out the math on this proposal. The article references a potential cut of $100,000 on a pension that would have earned $1.8 million before the cut (reducing the pension to $1.7 million).

It also talks about someone serving from 18 to 38, retiring at 62, and so forth. When you retire from the military, do you begin earning your pension immediately, even if you are only 38 or 40? If so, using the figures given in the article, someone who retires at 38 would collect $1.8 million over 24 years, and $1.7 million in the new system. But if the actual COLA is 2.5%, and they get 1% less (1.5%), that would cut the annual pension COLA by about $700, or about $16,000 over the 24 years from age 38 to age 62, at which time (according to the article) the veteran would be reimbursed for that difference. And is a military pension currently about $70,000 a year? That's the number I get using the figures in the article. So I think the article is very confusing because the numbers don't add up. How could a 1% reduction in the COLA add up to $100,000? Only if we have very high inflation? Even then, at 62 the veteran would get it all back.

To not get an income tax hike and even more draconian spending with a socialist President is BS? To hold the line is BS?

Uh.....OK whatever.
