Two US military aircraft have been fired at during an evacuation mission in South Sudan, wounding two service personnel.
One is said to be in a critical condition, and it is thought at least one of the planes was damaged.
South Sudan has blamed the attack on renegade troops.
Officials said the aircraft were heading to Bor, the capital of the state of Jonglei and the scene of some of the country's worst violence in the past week.
After being fired at the planes turned around and headed to Kampala in Uganda. From there the wounded service personnel were flown to Nairobi, Kenya for medical treatment.
Fighting broke out in the South Sudanese capital Juba between army factions last Sunday and has since spread to other regions.

What’s the connection between South Sudan, Benghazi and obama ?
Typical. African strongman takes power, decides all the goodies belong to him. For the rest of his natural life. Result? Civil war.
Wonder how American mothers feel about their sons being sent to Africa to die under UN auspices. Also if an American serviceman dies under UN command is he buried with a UN flag draped over his coffin?
Whatever stretches the military even thinner.
And we are there why? How long before we escalate our involvement? What is there that is of such great interest to Big Business or of great strategic importance?
One Black Dictator helping another.
Africa is so much better after the blacks kicked the whites out, isn’t it?
I wonder where the rebels got their weapons.
And we are there BECAUSE??????????????????
They’ve shot down a Russian chopper killing four crew exactly a year ago there. December 21 seems to be a special day in South Sudan for that matter.
The illegal war in Africa is because Obama is getting personal revenge for his father.
Post that and liberals will say that is what Bush did in Iraq.
Then you tell them that since Obama did it, and they are not complaining, that they have to stop complaining about Bush doing it.
Liberal heads explode.
Sounds like you’re talking about America.
Apparently the Michael New case revealed that could very well be.
On 31 July she commenced the first leg of a patrol in the Tonkin Gulf. Initially a routine patrol, it developed into a defensive action with global repercussions. On 2 August, Maddox, cruising in international waters, was closed in a torpedo run by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. During the ensuing skirmish, in which torpedoes were launched at Maddox, the destroyer put two of the Communist boats out of action with direct hits.
This attack, at first assumed to have been in error, was proven deliberate within 48 hours. On the 4th, North Vietnamese patrol boats again attack Maddox, which by this time had been joined by Turner Joy. Early detection and skillful evasion permitted the destroyers to break contact with the first assault units sent against them on that date. But, little over an hour later, enemy torpedo boats closed in again, launching torpedoes. Maddox commenced firing starshells for illumination, while Turner Joy opened fire on the attacking boats. The fighting continued for 21⁄2 hours before being broken off by the North Vietnamese. Retaliation in the form of airstrikes on North Vietnamese patrol boat bases and their supporting oil storage depots came within a few hours. For this action both ships were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation. Following the incident, the destroyers returned to their patrol, completing it on the 8th. Maddox then resumed carrier operations until departing for Long Beach 17 September."
Tribalism is the underlying tension in most of sub-Saharan Africa.
As far as I can tell, the current Sudanese fighting is Dinka tribesmen fighting Nuer tribesman.
Stop the aid and military support and let them stew in their own feces. They'll figure it out.
As I understand it, US military were posted to South Sudan in order to evacuate American citizens from harms way. A tribal conflict endangered their lives.
Why are we messing with these clowns? The United States should now make it a point to go after these guys and crush them. Start by sending in a squad of A-10’s and pummel them with 20mm cannon fire. That would make them think before firing on US aircraft in the future. We should certainly do something.
You have apparently forgotten who the CIC is.
