The City Council banned Styrofoam and banished electronic cigarettes in a flurry of last-minute lawmaking Thursday at Speaker Christine Quinn’s emotional final meeting.

Quinn said a tearful goodbye to the Council with her trademark feistiness. “The city is a better place because of all of you, and I just want to say thank you,” she said. “We were tough. We didn’t take any s---.”

Before her farewell, the Council passed a record 26 bills and resolutions.

Under the foam container ban, polystyrene coffee cups and takeout containers will be outlawed. “Most foam ends up in landfills, where it can sit for literally 500 years or longer,” Quinn said. “The only thing in the world that lives longer than cockroaches or Cher is Styrofoam.”

Soon it will be illegal to even pretend you are smoking a cigarette.

“...Most foam ends up in landfills, where it can sit for 500 years...”

Why is that a problem?

The most UN-educated, UN-reasoning, UN-believable people in the world are liberals.

I think I’d be more concerned about Cher sticking around for 500 years.

500 years is nothing compared to how long a disposable diaper lasts. Did they ban those too, or simply the production of those who wear them?

I didn’t know styrofoam sits. I thought it just lays there till a nice wind comes along and blows it to another location.

BTW, dirt fills the landfills also. We must ban dirt since it hasn’t disintegrated yet.

Yeah, I think that's part of the RAT's Queer-agenda.

Did you ever think that the purpose of humans is to produce styrofoam for “Mother Earth”? /George Carlin

UN educated.

That there’s a nice double entendre, whether intentional or not!

No, smoking will stay legal on account of the tax revenue it generates. E-cigarettes cannot be tolerated because they interfere with this.

Hell, it’s already illegal for children to pretend they have a gun or a bow and arrows.

Starting January 1 in Illinois tossing a cigarette butt out of a car can get you a $1500 fine. First offense.

We were at the travel agent this afternoon booking a cruise. She said some ships don’t allow smoking on your own balcony . . . but they allow it in the casinos and bars while you’re spending your hard-earned cash.

I think of all the ills of this world, hypocrisy ticks me off the most.

We must ban dirt since it hasn’t disintegrated yet.

Don't forget that we must also cleanup the contamination. Dirt remediation is an expensive time consuming process and the technology is not well developed yet.

Some recent experiments have been tried with various detergents - apply detergent, cover with tarp, wait six months) but in the end the pile of dirt was still there and was not cleaned by the candidates (Tide, a Costco brand and several others). It was still dirty. But they did discover that if you apply various conditioning treatments the dirt is soft and manageable afterwards.

Dead dinosaurs, animal poop, rotten trees and other kinds of organic material sat around for millions of years and came out as oil. The same fate will happen with Styrofoam. I’ll bet money on it—if I had a million years.
